dont bother with LEDs. they may veg a plant, but they dont do shit for flowering.

I wouldn't say that this is ENTIRELY true, but its close enough. There are LED arrays that will give equal results, but you'll spend WAAAYY more $$$$$ on them. Check out the Mandala Satori LED extravaganza thread to see an LED grow.

I totally disagree with this statement, LED tech. has come a long way since the first UFO setups were released. In a side by side comparison, HID lamps like an HPS will outperform LED's, but on the other hand if it was a choice between floro's or LED I'd go with the LED (well I'd go with neither since I prefer HPS lights ).

people are comparing 300 watt LEDS to 1000 watt HPS.
What about a 600 watt LED vs a 600 watt HPS?
aren't the LEDs providing only the light that is absorbable whereas the HPS is wasting a lot of light in the mid Kelvin range???

the guy at my hydro store was telling me he got like 10 UFOs in (i think they were UFOs) and said 8 of them were returned because they couldnt pull the weight. he said the technology still isnt there for LEDs to flower plants like we want our buds to flower... he said theyre good and they work, just not as good as people think.
until LED grow light systems are setup for strong vegging and flowering, im sticking with the tried and true HPS.

There are a helluva lot more better systems the UFO's. However, they seem to be rather expensive if you want to do anything amazing with them.
I don't doubt the power of LED's at all, it's definitely going to be the way a lot of people grow in the future. I just think it's not perfected yet, and at the very least, all the systems that would be worth it are just too damn pricey.

LEDs have the light to veg, but not flower. ive heard it from hydro store owners, friends that have used them, and in retardweed's youtube videos. he says how useless they are. small tiny airy buds...

There are good LED's and shitty ones...we can't just assume because some ppl used LED's and not had good results that all LED's are shit. From my research and talking with ppl...i have learned that there are great systems out there that can rival HID. I still use HID though....why? well prices are ridiculous right now....but im lookin into making my own panels to cut down on the cost.

I use LED's, I agree that LED doesnt quite live up to HPS, and I believe this is due to the mixtures of wavelengths available.
I use all Red:blue LED's for Veg and flowering, and I love the fact that i can run a system that can never kill the plants due to a fan failure.
They make flowering LED's that use white LED's mixed in with the Red and blue. This can also be done by running a small CFL with the Red:blue LED's
In a side by side comparison between a 300W HPS and a 300W LED, I would go with the LED, but as far as equivalent wattage that companies claim, a 600W equivalent LED would not yield as much as a 600W HPS.
Another downside is that good LED systems are insanely expensive...there is a thread where i try to explain why LED's dont work that well for flowering...here

Can anybody steer me toward a high quality LED light setup? Price does not matter. I want something that actually works for all phases of growing. I realize that LED yields might be less than a HPS, but I can't grow in the summer anyway because of heat buildup. So, getting 50% as much yield isn't a huge deal to me.

Hm... Can somebody tell me why there is such huge price discrepancy between two web sites on the same type of setup?
http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=53987

Are either of these setups any good?

have you considered using flourescents? i would recommend them over LEDs. they produce some heat, but nothing that compares to that of HID lamps.

I have heard that flourescents suck for flowering, but I have never tested it. Flourescent cool white bulbs are awesome for vegetating (I have my moms under them and I constantly have to chop them down because they are so growing so lushly).

here ya go (sorry don't know whats wrong with the video, second videos aren't supposed to work)
<object style="height: 344px; width: 425px"><param name="movie" value="><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></object>
and this
<object style="height: 344px; width: 425px"><param name="movie" value="><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></object>
you'll notice that if you compare total energy USED, and grams harvested, you see that LED out-preforms. That's important, total energy used, because you can determine cost per gram, which most people don't take into consideration. People who say LED isn't as good want big buds and big plants, not the most cost efficient.

See...this is what fucking puzzles me. The first video shows badass LED yields with the tomato plant and the second video shows a stringy-ass and pathetic looking pot plant under the LED that produced horrible looking buds. Which is it? Reasonable yields or crap yields?

they can veg but cant flower. thats about all theyre good for.
i was thinking about T5s when i posted. that way you can switch the bulbs out to have the different color temp during flowering.
HID>Fluro>LED IMO at least. im no expert, but this is from what ive seen personally.

Go with MH and HPS. That is quite something that the tomatoes did well under LED and then in another independent test LED failed with the pot plant.

The mystery deepens:
I've been poking around icmag.com. There is a vendor on the site called www.hydrogrowled.com.
I am reading that the reason that a lot of LED's aren't producing well is because they are not giving heat to the plants. As we all know, HID's run very hot and give off lots of heat. But, these GrowLED fixtures have some extra heat wattage added in to eliminate that problem. Some of the pictures I am seeing look pretty damn good. LED's look like they work when you buy high-quality and use them properly.

Heat should have nothing to do with it. That doesn't even make sense. Plants grow from photosynthesizing light, not absorbing heat. If you just keep your grow room around 70 it's not a problem.

Where the vendor talks about heat importance:
Shit...I can't find it now. I remember reading it and it's on that vendor forum somewhere. Basically, the vendor says that plants fruit best when their surface area is a bit warmer. Since LED's give off little heat they added some heat stuff to give their setup an extra "heat-oomph".
Examples of at least some budding success with LED's:

'good enough for your average smoker' is just above bottom shelf in many parts of the US. Those links are nice grows but holy fucking shit @ the guy in the top post.
Quote:
Cost breakdown: 4.25 x $320 = $1360 is what we would have paid for this from our buddies who get it out of humbolt. $450x2=$900 for the lights, $175 for the tent, $50 for the fan and I already had the scrubber/nutes/ferts/soil.... So that is $1125 spent on this grow + electricity. We saved approx $225 and got 4 dozen cookies out of it.
If I use his math and the average price for a QP here of $900 he's in the hole and I don't think for one minute his buds are anywhere near the quality of a top shelf california bag, which should come to you for that same $900/qp. If you add the cost of nute/scrubber etc that he already had hes more then $400 in the hole. Then if I compare apples to apples and say his QP is worth $700 he's totally upside down and needs another full harvest to break even.
LED's are shiny and new but they have no place in a flowering room IMO. If he had used commercial HID's, even at a high price of $350/ 400w setup he would saved $200 and have better yields. If he had gone the CFL route he could of done the same grow with less then $100 invested in lights and would have more light and if my grow is an indicator denser buds (mine are rock hard now and 4 inches under 130w of CFL)

Wow... must be nice living where you live. You could bring that $900 QP of dank to my area and sell it for $1200 no sweat. 1/8's of good shit go for $60 around here. Somebody needs to start smuggling this stuff my way.

It always takes a grow or two to break even on the initial cost of material. From just looking at those buds...it does appear that LED's can deliver in flowering. Are they as good as an H.P.S.? No. But, if you are in a confined space with no venting or you want to keep your electric bill down and the initial cost of the LED panel doesn't bother you then I can see how they can be a viable alternative to H.P.S.
However, I do admit that the inconsistencies between LED grows does bother me. How are some people able to get decent looking buds, but others get garbage? What is the factor that is causing these discrepancies?

It is the fact that LED's in general are less then equal. LED's are produced around what $.01 a unit. Large HID bulbs run into the hundreds, quality difference? No duh. That's not to say you can't buy good LED's but if you think the company building the units is going to use the very best available or test each LED before assembly your kidding yourself.

I live in no-wheresville but there seems to be a lot of large traffic come through. The kids who by 1/8th pay 50-60 but no one that buys regular weight pays more then a G. It's not always the shit and the guys who always have the shit charge accordingly, but even my discerning tastes are satisfied more often then not.

I guess if you do a lot of things wrong and spend a lot of money of big bottles of liquid hope, yeah that could be true, but I am about to harvest my first round and am seeing very different results. If I add in the original cost of the vacume cleaner I used the cord off of for my wiring and don't count that I used half the wood to build a custom beer pong table my cost to completion of this first grow is....drum roll... 170 bucks, the vacume was $55. I am hoping for 2 oz's, prolly will be on the low side of that but close.
Now if I had used just a 100w LED (I have 130w 2700k + 46w 6500k CFL plus a nearly 200w flower chamber all for ~$80) my light cost alone would be $189 (the cheapest in a quick google search) to match anything close to my total output either watt-wise or lumen-wise it would cost more then more then $500.
Lights and wire: $80 Old Freezer: $0 Metal Blade for my jigsaw: $1 Wood for the project: $20
Laying the smack down on LED fanbois: Priceless
note: I am not picking on you or anyone else that might love LED's this all just my opinion mixed with real world experience and some humor.

Well it could just be a difference in the growers ability/experience. Some people also have a knack for growing things, while others struggle to keep plants alive.
It could also be due to brand/blend of light spectrum from the LED's. It's really hard to say.
There's really no way you can vent your lights?? How are you going to get fresh air into your grow space to keep your CO2 levels up??

The same thing crossed my mind, any grow has to have air it almost more important then the fucking lights.

I can't. Hence why my girls don't always look their best by week 8.

Do you at least supplement CO2 in some way?

No. I feel sketchy enough going to the local hydro store to buy bulbs and nutes. Whipping out even more money for even more stuff/accessories just looks shady.

Are you serious?? Dude, buying tanks of CO2 is completely legal. And not sketchy at all. Also, your willing to go and buy LED lights from them, but not CO2 equipment. It's not like your the only person buying equipment from these places. I'm sure that there are people buying WAY more equipment at this place than you'll ever aspire too.
Just relax buy all the equipment you want, there's nothing sketchy about it.

I agree with hawksapprentice. I felt pretty sketch the first couple times at my local hydro store also. I even went so far as to having friends drive me so the cops couldn't trace the plates from the car back to my address. However, the second time I ever went in they were ringing a guy up with 16,000W of light and enough hydro systems and nutes to last years. I figure if he can walk out of that store in broad daylight and load that shit up in his truck I'm completely fine buying a bottle of FloraNova from them

I was going to order it online...to another person's house.

You're probably right. I still get freaked out going to those stores though. I remember laying out $1,000 in cash for my first pimp H.P.S. light and a decent ebb-and-flow table with a bunch of stuff and I was sketched out.

Well don't be. There's nothing illegal about going shopping.

If I was buying that amount of gear I'd ask the guy if it's worth his time to deliver it on a day off or something.

I seriously don't know what all the fuss is about guys its not like when you go into a hydro store the guy running it is under any disillusions about what your primary crop is. sure you might run a few veggies but tell me your really going to buy something like voodoo juice or a bottle of gravity for fucking tomatoes.
the only reason you feel stetchy is because you probably are.

maybe things are more lax in medical states but I've heard of multiple hydroponics shops that have been watched for people leaving and I've even heard of a couple that were cooperating or even run by police.
Even the best of places could have a cop parked a block away looking for people coming and leaving or better yet loading a commercial setup into a truck.

so what if they do? the point is there is nothing illegal for sale and owning any amount of lights is still 100% legal even if they follow you home and sit on your curb for a week there should still be no reason to be worried.

ever hear the saying a ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?
Shit, using your ideology I could just toss garbage bags of soil, empty hydroponics containers, leave a paper trail for every questionable item I've purchased in my life and not have to worry about it because nothing is technically illegal.

yeah you know damn well all the thing you just mentioned are no-no's big time. what i am saying is going to a store wether they sell lights or shoes is legal and there is nothing they can say to get a warrant just because you bought a few lights. if it scares you that bad don't go there. DIY all your fixtures from home depot parts and build your own hydro tables it's not rocket science.

Everything I mentioned above is LEGAL too. There's no difference in reality if I'm caught buying stuff from a hydroponics store or if my trash contains related material. It's actually worse to be caught at the store and have your identity revealed or even followed home because it's safe to say that they were onto you if they're going through your trash.
I don't see how being discreet when disposing of your garbage is any less important than purchasing your supplies.

Like I said if it scares ya you can always DIY and then you have that much less to worry about. I am not going to debate the legality of shopping at a hydro store or buying nutrients marketed for cannabis growing. For people who feel the need there is literally terrabits of information on building each and every piece of equipment you could need. I will continue to shop locally as I am sure the cops have better ways of finding the grows then squatting at the hydro shop and I am reasonably sure they have more pressing issues in my area anyways.
Smoke a bowl guys lets get baked, thinking bout pulling a little bit off my birthday nug... ohhh must resist ahhhh!! I can't help myself, spark spark puff

Yeah cannabis is the least of the cops worries in my area... The hydro shops are not watched here I can assure you of that. The only thing cannabis grow wise that they are looking for are residential houses that have been converted into massive operations. They have FLIR for that anyways, no need to beat around the bush. And YES, they CAN use FLIR for warrants, at least in my state. It was just in the paper a week ago how the ruling was overturned because they believe it is constitutional. They couldn't care less about all the closet growing college students. It's the 100+ plant busts that they are concerned with, that and the terrible opiate problem in the Twin Cities. I'd HATE to live in the bible belt.
I would rather DIY anyways, because I used to do stuff like that for a career, and it gives me pride building my own creations.
