In your opinion, who makes the best performing LED grow lights for around $500?
I'm not interested in incandescent-vs-HID-vs-led debate here, I am only asking about LED.

You could probably find a 300w LED grow light for around $500, I just dont know where
but if what people say about LED grows is true then that would be equivalent to almost 2000w of HID lighting

Is that calculation correct? is it equal to 2000w of HID light? but can you cover the same amount of area? What I mean is are the plants on the edge of the grow room going to be the same? or will the leds mostly direct their light downward.

wow 300watts LED equals 2Kwatt HID? sure that isnt an over statement? dont know much about LED but im sure the direction of any light is dictated by angles of the surface it reflects off of, a parabolic hood is the best shape, 2000watts would flood a medium closet grow beyond the edge.

no...300W LEDs are somewhere in the ballpark of a 1000W HID, 600W LEDs will get you in the 2000W HID range...but these usually run around 1700 to 2000 dollars a pop.
growlLED in google gives you a good site with 120W LEDs for about 475...and are equivalent to a 600W HID light. I own a 90W and 120W model from them and I know they work very well.

what is the life expectancy of an led?
it has been a while and these are brand new to me
depending on the life of the unit i imagine they would pay for themselves pretty quick on the savings on elec bill.

LED's are the future but the light spectrums optimal for cannabis growth hasn't been mastered at this point.
I wouldn't fool with them until they come out with something a little better...Though the average grower would probably be happy with the results for the wattage used.

LED have a bad track record.
LED+ HPS or MH will work good, but it would be fine minus the led.

Can I see links to a growlog or papers that suggest this? I'm sorry but I am getting good results from LED alone...and awesome results from LED and one CFL.
I need solid info, not claims and "I heard this from blabla..."
BTW, they now make LED flowering lights that include different LEDs, including some white LEDs. I have never tried them, but the standard 7:1:1 Red:Blue:Orange works fine for flowering.

Agmotes, you have grown great looking bud with LEDs. I enjoyed your grow log and it proved a lot of points.
But, for the price I couldn't go with LEDs as my main light. Someday I'd like to experiment with them though.

Oh I understand that completely, they are hella expensive.
My main beef is that a lot of people are just shrugging off the idea of LEDs because of something their friends told them or some article on the theory of magical z-waves that are only produced by HID lights and if you try to grow MJ with LEDs, it will turn into a tomato plant  .
I will go ahead and say that LEDs are not worth the money if you have the space and cooling capacity for HIDs.
But, I am trying to get rid of the notion that LEDs dont work. And if you are like me (growing out of a sealed closet in an apartment complex, no vents or outlets in the closet) and you have a little extra money laying around and really wanna grow but you dont want your closet to be over 100 degrees or the Electricity bill to show really high, Then LEDs may be worth the investment.
The bud off of my last growlog is some of the best bud I've ever smoked. I wont lend that to the LEDs, but I know for a fact that the LEDs WILL PRODUCE QUALITY BUD.

Decent, I trained a plant to stay low and wide...it was 18inches tall on the main cola, and about 2.5 feet across at its widest point, and yielded about 25 grams. I like hash though so i just used some of the smaller lower buds along with the trim to make hash haha.

well according to mr greens I grow chronic,
He does a ebb flow hydro and buds 4 plants they get to about 2.5 feet tall id say and he gets over a qp per plant.
That is quite a difference.
This is what people are talking about when it comes to led's.
You get a fraction of the yeild.
