Would using, at largest, a 2.2 gallon pot, with two transplants and at the second transplant doing the following give a decent yield?

When I transplanted into the 10 inch pots: I cut away about half of the white feeder roots and sliced into the root ball, from four directions with a sharp knife. It's not something I recommend to everyone, it's a Dutch thing.
EDIT: also, what soil would be better, generic leaf soil or miracle grow? it's the only soild I have access to at the moment.
