 How to ease transplant stress?

I've got some outdoor plants in 5 gallon pots and was going to dig some holes in the ground for them, I feel like they need more room because they're almost 5 feet tall.
So I was wondering what you could give a plant to ease the stress from transplanting  I've heard some stuff about this before but I don't remember what it was
