Is a 400w mh gonna be too hot for a 2x2x4 cab?

absolutely, unless you have some serious ventilation. i have one setup in a small bathroom right now that is approximately 2'x6'x8' and even with the cieling vent on, its too hot

I ran a 400w hps in a 1'6" x 2'4" x 4' cab with a cool tube and a 170cfm inline centrifugal fan at about 7o above ambient.

Thanks fellas... I just supplemented my six 26w cfls with a 125w red cfl. Had one 60 degree day outside, and temps in my cab jumped to 95. I moved my setup to a downstairs closet, now it's a comfy 75-80... Still no way to ventilate, so I'm gonna have to stick with the cfls...for now.

hey i just got a 150 watt hps and it is not bad at all in my cab(witch is 2x2x4 also) and my temps did not rise at all above what the cfl,s put out. just a idea for space. maby you could get enough ventilation some how and even get a 250 watter.

You need a 250W Led fixture. Yah it costs money, but it's really the only solution for your needs. Also it runs less electrical, so if you continue growing for 5 years it actually would be cheaper.
And I hate to say, but the LED fixtures now besides cost are better then CFL's, and just as good as HPS at least in smaller distances. The only real downside to LED's is light pen (still working on that one) and cost. I sure miss mine, plants look way better with LED + HPS then just HPS. Proof of concept.
More spectrum of light with an LED vs even a ridiculously over priced HPS bulb (omg I buy the cheapest ones sorry, same fucking thing). Might as well invest in and LED with UVB in some of the spectrum, even kills mold I hear from Ed Rosenthal. Hum, maybe I'm just stupid and he isn't.
