Hydrofarm 125w CFL fixture
    #520642 - 01/29/11 01:14 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I've got a quick question.  Will this light be enough to vegetate 8 or so plants? They are all going to be in a DWC setup with techniflora nutes.  They will also be in a 3x3 mylar tent with a 4" carbon scrubber.

I might end up growing 4 cannabis plants and 4 poppy plants and maybe a few 17w bulbs.

I'd say 3 or 4 maximum but for only the first few weeks of veg growth, since it's a cfl. Maybe even throughout the entire veg duration. However you'd definitely would need to upgrade during flowering. You'd have to add a lot more wattage if you'd want to start more plants. Also it all depends on how tall you want them to be at it's final height and yield. That's just based off what I've read concerning cfls. An experienced person will give you a better answer though.

I can probably add about 102 wats of CFL light and maybe 130w of T5 floro.  I figure the final output wattage of my whole light system to be about 1000w including the floros.  I might throw in one of my Red/Blue LED panels for flowring enhancments, I might not.

Keep in mind, the 125w CFL has an output energy level of a normal 400w MH.

3-4 would be the max in my opinion as well.  I veg that number of plants under 108 watts of CFL and then Flower under 300 watts of CFL.  I am looking into buying a 400 watt HID thought because I've maxed out my CFL's potential.

How much does that setup sale for?

My total set up is as follows:

-Reflective Mylar 32" X 32" X 63" Hydroponics Grow Tent ($70)
-4" Carbon Scrubber with inline fan ($95)
-125w CFL with Reflector ($60 - different than one pictured, I'm using the hydrofarm one for a different tent)
-DWC Hydro set up ($60 including 40 gallon pump and airstones)
-Nutrients ($40)
Total:$425

As a whole, the system is worth about $600 when put together. =)

They hydrofarm light cost me $90 brand new w/ the light.

Can't you get a 150watt hps for like 100 bucks?

Most likely, but I chose to go the CFL route because of it's lower temps, virtual/actual wattage output, and low energy cost.  I've always grown with CFLs and just thought I'd step up to an actual ballast.  I can't ventilate a HID bulb with my parameters, I just hope this will all work out.

I suggest ebay or amazon.  I know a really really good retailer on amazon.  They have great service:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034QE9ZY

The first bulb they sent me was broken, and they sent me a replacment at no extra charge.

and thats the bulb with the really wide threads? i dont mean to sound so stupid. or do they make socket adaptors for this problem cause that would be perfect

There might be adapters out there, but I'm not sure of what kind of threading is on your original bulb.  I think what you may have is a 17w CFL.  It's output power is equivelant to 125w.  The hydrofarm bulb needs a 125w bulb with mogul sockets (which is the big thread); the 125w size bulb is equivelant to a 400 MH.

It's not very effective to put such a small bulb in a large bulb socket though.  I'd recomend getting a hanging socket fixture for regular bulbs to use with the small thread bulb.  If you look back on the link, you'll see that the actual 125w bulb is huge.

No the bulb i got is about 13 inches long. Its meant for this type of fixture. I'm assuming its the wrong size thread because its from china. I just need to know what the standard household light socket size is, either E12 or E19 or E#?. i just need an adaptor to plug E(#) into a mogul socket. So can anyone tell me what the standard house lightbulb socket size is?

I beleive the standard socket size is E26.

Holy fucking Jesus tits I wish I had seen this thread when it was initially made.

the virtual/actual wattage conversion for CFL's is absolutely NOT correct. I will bet you every penny I own right now that a 125W cfl won't grow even 10% of the bud that a 400W MH will. The conversion is from CFL to incandescent first of all (not CFL to HID, completely different bulbs and I'd hope you'd know that) but also the conversion is measuring LUMEN output, which has absolutely Nothing to do with light that's usable by plants.

I'm sorry you purchased that light. You can string together 300 actual watts of CFL's for around $50 at your local hardware store, in any array you need. not only is it more than double your light output, but it's infinitely expandable, infinitely customizable to your plant shapes, and infinitely more replaceable if a single bulb breaks.
Trust me homie, i've been there

Yeah, I realized that and found some bulbs that of smaller wattages have the same lumen output.  The bulb I have only puts out 7,000 lumens which is enough to cover a 4x4 space, but is the same output as some  25w CFL.  Crazy? I think so...obama.

I have no idea where you're getting your information from. First, as stated above, lumens have absolutely nothing to do with plant growth.

Secondly, if you're going to use lumens, 7000 is not even close to enough for a 4x4 space! the majority of growers go for 1,000W of HID per 4x4 space which is roughly 130,000 lumens. Like, 20 times more light than you're talking.

your goal here is to maximize ACTUAL watts of the CFL's. I like to use the 26W bulbs, but I even have some 42W CFL's in my setup. don't worry about lumens, just worry about color temperature and actual wattage consumption.

I'm not sure how I missed that, but that is wrong. I think this light is a waste of money. I would not grow more than 1 or 2 plants under it.

Get a 150 HID for not much more and be done.  I don't think the heat will be much more.  My CFL set up creates a lot of heat.
