Before I installed Windows 7, while using Vista, I preferred booting in Ubuntu. It has a large driver support and it even found my printer. Just be sure to check the hardware compatibility list before you install any distro.

any various linux distribution is by far your best (free) alternative to mac/windows .
Linux used to require a lot of technical skills to install & use but nowaways you can use a distribution like Ubuntu , burn a cd/dvd and you're ready to go, installing ubuntu is as easy as installing windows , and there is by default a windows type GUI (kde or gnome) that is extremely similar to windows & easy to use, and less ugly looking in window's case.
there are a bunch of different linux distros, setup and packaged differently, but they mostly share the same core/kernel source code, which is a long running open source project worked on by many talented developers, and so linux in its modern form is really a great OS in it's own right, very secure, all free software, etc. For beginners i would recommend Ubuntu or Mint linux ( http://www.linuxmint.com/ )

Thanks for the replies so far.
Like I said I am a luddite... why do you need to use ubuntu to run linux, and what is GUI?
Linux sounds cool. Can you game on it? (again sorry if thats a stupid question). I know someone like me should not take up PC gaming but Im just curious...

Too many google searches, not enough time.
No seriously, use the search engine.
I'm just being honest here.

-edit- I'm up to early, and to sober.
I use windows, never saw a reason to change it.

Also, Ubuntu. Any problems, just just google the problem. Seriously. I'm not kidding.

True that.
And personally I like Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE as the default graphical interface). The actual desktop environment in GNOME is fine but I tend to prefer the KDE applications (amaroK is the shit).
