so its a lightboard controlled by your ubuntu box? are you a programmer? if not, good luck bro

my experience with lighting is limited, but are you gonna have a physical device with knobs / sliders and shit that connects via dmx/usb converted to your linux box? is it much cheaper compared to the proprietary systems or what?

nope...
no faders (sliders and knobs).....
instead ill write scenes via software on the computer...
this way, i can write scenes from home and not have to deal with old and crappy boards around town....
it makes my life wayyyy easier....
