Want to switch, but I want to keep all my files and most of my programs. Need it to be compatible, good looking and stable.

Compatible with what?

i dont recommend you change to linux without at least a goo understanding of unix/linux command shell, a good knowledge of the x11 system and know what open source software is a good substitute for your former windows program.
