they can veg but cant flower. thats about all theyre good for.
i was thinking about T5s when i posted. that way you can switch the bulbs out to have the different color temp during flowering.
HID>Fluro>LED IMO at least. im no expert, but this is from what ive seen personally.

Crap yields. Tomatoes aren't pot. And the first videos are pretty much just promotional ads.

well like I said. If you want dense buds, HPS. If you want the cheapest buds possible, LED.

Cheapest buds possible??? Have you actually looked at the prices for LED systems recently?

Go with MH and HPS. That is quite something that the tomatoes did well under LED and then in another independent test LED failed with the pot plant.

The mystery deepens:
I've been poking around icmag.com. There is a vendor on the site called www.hydrogrowled.com.
I am reading that the reason that a lot of LED's aren't producing well is because they are not giving heat to the plants. As we all know, HID's run very hot and give off lots of heat. But, these GrowLED fixtures have some extra heat wattage added in to eliminate that problem. Some of the pictures I am seeing look pretty damn good. LED's look like they work when you buy high-quality and use them properly.

Heat should have nothing to do with it. That doesn't even make sense. Plants grow from photosynthesizing light, not absorbing heat. If you just keep your grow room around 70 it's not a problem.

Where the vendor talks about heat importance:
Shit...I can't find it now. I remember reading it and it's on that vendor forum somewhere. Basically, the vendor says that plants fruit best when their surface area is a bit warmer. Since LED's give off little heat they added some heat stuff to give their setup an extra "heat-oomph".
Examples of at least some budding success with LED's:

Admittedly, the buds aren't monsters. But, they appear good enough for your average smoker.

'good enough for your average smoker' is just above bottom shelf in many parts of the US. Those links are nice grows but holy fucking shit @ the guy in the top post.
Quote:
Cost breakdown: 4.25 x $320 = $1360 is what we would have paid for this from our buddies who get it out of humbolt. $450x2=$900 for the lights, $175 for the tent, $50 for the fan and I already had the scrubber/nutes/ferts/soil.... So that is $1125 spent on this grow + electricity. We saved approx $225 and got 4 dozen cookies out of it.
If I use his math and the average price for a QP here of $900 he's in the hole and I don't think for one minute his buds are anywhere near the quality of a top shelf california bag, which should come to you for that same $900/qp. If you add the cost of nute/scrubber etc that he already had hes more then $400 in the hole. Then if I compare apples to apples and say his QP is worth $700 he's totally upside down and needs another full harvest to break even.
LED's are shiny and new but they have no place in a flowering room IMO. If he had used commercial HID's, even at a high price of $350/ 400w setup he would saved $200 and have better yields. If he had gone the CFL route he could of done the same grow with less then $100 invested in lights and would have more light and if my grow is an indicator denser buds (mine are rock hard now and 4 inches under 130w of CFL)

Wow... must be nice living where you live. You could bring that $900 QP of dank to my area and sell it for $1200 no sweat. 1/8's of good shit go for $60 around here. Somebody needs to start smuggling this stuff my way.

It always takes a grow or two to break even on the initial cost of material. From just looking at those buds...it does appear that LED's can deliver in flowering. Are they as good as an H.P.S.? No. But, if you are in a confined space with no venting or you want to keep your electric bill down and the initial cost of the LED panel doesn't bother you then I can see how they can be a viable alternative to H.P.S.
However, I do admit that the inconsistencies between LED grows does bother me. How are some people able to get decent looking buds, but others get garbage? What is the factor that is causing these discrepancies?

It is the fact that LED's in general are less then equal. LED's are produced around what $.01 a unit. Large HID bulbs run into the hundreds, quality difference? No duh. That's not to say you can't buy good LED's but if you think the company building the units is going to use the very best available or test each LED before assembly your kidding yourself.

I live in no-wheresville but there seems to be a lot of large traffic come through. The kids who by 1/8th pay 50-60 but no one that buys regular weight pays more then a G. It's not always the shit and the guys who always have the shit charge accordingly, but even my discerning tastes are satisfied more often then not.

I guess if you do a lot of things wrong and spend a lot of money of big bottles of liquid hope, yeah that could be true, but I am about to harvest my first round and am seeing very different results. If I add in the original cost of the vacume cleaner I used the cord off of for my wiring and don't count that I used half the wood to build a custom beer pong table my cost to completion of this first grow is....drum roll... 170 bucks, the vacume was $55. I am hoping for 2 oz's, prolly will be on the low side of that but close.
Now if I had used just a 100w LED (I have 130w 2700k + 46w 6500k CFL plus a nearly 200w flower chamber all for ~$80) my light cost alone would be $189 (the cheapest in a quick google search) to match anything close to my total output either watt-wise or lumen-wise it would cost more then more then $500.
Lights and wire: $80 Old Freezer: $0 Metal Blade for my jigsaw: $1 Wood for the project: $20
Laying the smack down on LED fanbois: Priceless
note: I am not picking on you or anyone else that might love LED's this all just my opinion mixed with real world experience and some humor.

Well it could just be a difference in the growers ability/experience. Some people also have a knack for growing things, while others struggle to keep plants alive.
It could also be due to brand/blend of light spectrum from the LED's. It's really hard to say.
There's really no way you can vent your lights?? How are you going to get fresh air into your grow space to keep your CO2 levels up??

The same thing crossed my mind, any grow has to have air it almost more important then the fucking lights.

I can't. Hence why my girls don't always look their best by week 8.

No. I feel sketchy enough going to the local hydro store to buy bulbs and nutes. Whipping out even more money for even more stuff/accessories just looks shady.

Are you serious?? Dude, buying tanks of CO2 is completely legal. And not sketchy at all. Also, your willing to go and buy LED lights from them, but not CO2 equipment. It's not like your the only person buying equipment from these places. I'm sure that there are people buying WAY more equipment at this place than you'll ever aspire too.
Just relax buy all the equipment you want, there's nothing sketchy about it.

I agree with hawksapprentice. I felt pretty sketch the first couple times at my local hydro store also. I even went so far as to having friends drive me so the cops couldn't trace the plates from the car back to my address. However, the second time I ever went in they were ringing a guy up with 16,000W of light and enough hydro systems and nutes to last years. I figure if he can walk out of that store in broad daylight and load that shit up in his truck I'm completely fine buying a bottle of FloraNova from them
