needs advice

i have 4 northern light plants growing 3 of which are females, 18 inches tall, plenty of nodes, under a 400watt MH, now the top 3 nodes each have the well developed dual pistil pre-flowers, but there is no alternations whatsoever, my fear is that my 400watt [hps during flowering] wont be enough to bud the plants thoroughly if i continue to let them grow taller.
but i also dont want to start the 12/12 if they wont start to bud without the alternations anyway.
so could i flower now or do i really have to wait for the alternations?

1st kill the male. 2nd your hps is fine for 3 plants even bigger than that. 3rd alternations are a good idea

You can start flowering now, many people grow seeds/cuttings @ 12/12 from day 1. The proper amount of veg time is all personal preference IMO.
Also your 400w HPS will be more than enough for three plants, even if you continue vegging for quite some time.

206 has it right. you really don't need to wait for anything for flowering time.

oh, well other mods like yrat say that a plant wont start flowering until it is mature regardless of light cycle. so what is the primary indication of maturity? what NORMALLY come first the preflowers or the alt-nodes?
i looked today, and now its the top 4 nodes that have pistil pre hairs, and instead of 2 pistils on each side of the node, there is now 4!! the plants are on 18/6 so maybe they are mature and are actually trying to enter flowering. if you were an inexperienced grower, what would you do?

well seeing pistils is a definite indicator of sexual maturity, so you're ready to flower now if you want to.
I hate to contradict yrat, but I have on multiple occasions flowered a plant before it was sexually mature, and never had an issue with it

Harry is right. I think that when you flower before the plant is sexually mature, it sort of forces it into maturity.
