What light for veg?
    #133573 - 10/17/08 07:21 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

What light is ideal for veg growth? Metal Halides or t5 multi bulb lights or wha? It would be clones in  soil-less mix flowered under 600hps.

i run t 5's right now just because of heat issues. to be honest, im kinda kicking my self for dropping so much money on the set up. maybe i shouldve just used regular floro's. but yeah. the t 5's work great.

MH bulbs have a good amount of blue spectrum light which is good for veg: it is the spectrum the plants need for vegetation and therefore helps to limit how much they stretch.

If heat isn't a big issue, I would go with MH. Like 81 said, they have a great spectrum for veg plants.

Check out the new CMH bulbs.alot less heat than a MH and a fuller spectrum for veg and flowering.

Most just use HPS all around if you get a hps bulb with a blue spectrum the metal halides aren't really worth buying.

Metal halides are a bit better for veg growth but produce more heat than hps, I wouldn't bother running a metal halide unless I had a veg area going on and was perpetually harvesting... or if I kept mothers.

Ceramic Metal halides only come in ~400w they're more ideal for veg growth but I hear they're not good for flowering... im not positive though.

so for instance, if Ihave a HPS 400W agromax bulb that has "blue spectrum"  (am-400hps) I could use that entire light for growth the entire plant life, is that what you mean?  Or, are you referring to the "HPS CONVERSION" bulbs?

your blue spectrum hps bulb can provide light for your vegging plants and it will be comparable to a metal halide.

a conversion bulb is where you run a metal halide in a hps

I own metal halides and I haven't bothered using them because of this reason. If I grew enough to justify having a veg room then I would use them but I dont.

a few t 5's is good enough for at least 6 bonsai mothers + clones + some veg plants.

with an MH bulb, especially in the summer, one tends to have a huge heat build up. if you're running a 600 w or two and are concerned about having to buy a new intake/ exhaust, than just go for t 5's. i run them and i can tell you that they tend to be less problematic than an HID.

where's my pie?

Ok, MH is gonna be best for veg growth. Floro's are nice and crap but you can't compare the two. Gonna take 600 watts of floro light to come close to a 250 watt MH. The HPS with the blue spectrum added are nice but those don't compare to a MH when it comes to veg growth. The are good if you are forced to use one light system the whole way threw. Even then you'd be better off doing the conversion bulb thing.

No, CMH is best.
Much less heat than a MH.

Either or, if you can afford it, go with a MH bulb for veg.  Less stretch on your plants, more efficient with your veg cycle, overall much better for your plant then a fluro is.  Also, if you want, you can run your MH along with an HPS during flowering to increase trich production.  UVB light ftw!

How much uvb light do metal halides have compared to using those reptile lights?

Them reptile lights are like 30 uva/5 uvb @ 40w or something like that.

Wow, i may just see how runnin' the 400W HPS all the way through comes out.  I wonder if it will force the plant to sex faster? anyone ever really tried this?  I'd rather get a 250w MH setup but short on the $$$$... all goes to weed

I run my HPS start to finish. It doesn't help sex the plants any faster.

Plants sex from their vegging or flowering duration.

Plants put into flowering will sex in about a week if developed and rooted cuttings put into flowering about the same. Plants will show sex in 4-6 weeks in my experience which is very limited.

yah, if left to their own devices in veg, plants will usually mature around the 4 week mark.  I never had plants take much longer then a month in veg from seed to show their sex.
