MH bulb life

Hi, I’m a new member, new grower, and first time poster...just curious to know about how many grows most people average from their MH bulbs. Mine comes on but then shuts off, turns back on for a minute, shuts off again, etc. The ballast works fine (no problems running HPS on it).

Are you certain you have a dual purpose ballast? Some ballasts are designed for one lamp type or the other.
If you have a dual service ballast, I would suggest trying a known good lamp in your ballast to make sure it's your lamp and not the ballast.
One other thing, are both lamps the same wattage as the ballast is designed for?

Generally speaking bulbs are recommended to be replaced every 4 to 5 months for best results.

The ballast has a switch for MH or HPS and came with one bulb of each. This is the original bulb that came with the ballast. The bulb started doing that at the end off my last veg cycle but the ballast worked just fine during flowering with the HPS bulb.
I ran the MH bulb for 2 full veg cycles, I guess.I just expected it to last longer. The replacement bulb I ordered came today but it’s a different brand and the light quality looks much different. More blue and less bright looking despite being 1000w like the other.....

his Optimized Spectrum Metal Halide Grow Lamp allows you to stretch your growing season to 365 days a year. Fine-tune your lighting system to provide optimum spectral energy levels that promote vigorous plant growth. Optimized Spectrum Metal Halide Grow Lamps provide high initial and maintained lumen output with optimum spectral energy required for vegetative growth. Optimized Spectrum Metal Halide Grow Lamps are designed to grow high quality, natural looking plants during all phases of their growth cycles.
1. High output, balanced spectrum is engineered specifically to promote vigorous plant growth. 2. Robust stainless steel armature versus nickel plated steel, far stronger and longer lasting. 3. Optimized spectrum (Violet and Blue) and high PAR (Photosynthetic Active Radiation) to enhance vegetative growth 4. Extra-low lumen depreciation: maintaining over 90% of initial lumen output after running for 5,000 hours. 5. Fusion Bright bulbs work well with both Magnetic and Digital Ballasts.
5000 hours or at 10% light loss is a good time to replace your MH bulb. At 12 hours a day that is 416 days or 277 days at 18 hours per day. I replace my bulbs at 365 days or one year. Since I use the MH both with veg and flowering adding the HPS when I start flowering.
I have had one bulb go bad within six months and had to be replace as well.
