I'm hoping it performs as well as they say.

Yes, it's a retro-fit bulb that works with magnetic High Pressure Sodium balllasts.
It looks like this.
They produce a much better color spectrum than HPS or standered MH. Unfortunatly, it appears that the wider color spectrum comes at a cost of few lumens. On the bright side(pun intended), the Ceramic MH produces better light penitration than a HPS bulb.
Once I get my ballast retrofitted with the HPS internals I will keep everyone posted in my grow jurnal here.

Its not a problem, especially when you consider what the definition of a lumen is.

I hope so too, I bought 2 ceramic metal halides a while ago along with 2 400w ballast kits, haven't had the opportunity to test it yet though.

hmm
prehaps ill run a side by side I have 2 400w ballasts
most magnetic 400w ballasts can fire a 400w cmh?
I could run a flip flop on both and do 2 x cmh and 2xhps grows at once.

As far as I've read it's just electronic ballasts that can't fire a 400w cmh.

No they aren't commonly available at hydro shops, you would need to get it online. I got mine here.

One thing to keep in mind is that ceramic MH produce less heat, and they should be positioned closer than an HPS or MH bulb would be to get better results. Also, I would probably expect shorter plants than with an HPS because the plants grow out looking for that blue spectrum light, and this bulb will give it to them, so they shouldn't explore as much to find it. The plants should have a shorter veg time because it won't take them as long to mature, since they are getting more of the light they need to make it happen.

I wonder how good these are. They're not produced over 400w's yet
