Ceramic Metal Halides
    #44484 - 05/31/08 10:13 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Does anyone here have any experience with CMH lamps? From what I have read they have a much better light spectrum than regular MH or HPS and will work with HPS ballasts. Just looking for some information before I take the plunge.

Some basic info:

Ceramic Metal Halide lamps are currently not available in sizes over 400 watts. Philips is working on it, however there is no ETA.

The CMH lamps 150w and lower should work with digital ballasts.

250w and 400w CMH lamps will NOT work with ANY digital ballast EXCEPT the ones SPECIFICALLY made to fire CMH lamps.

250w and 400w CMH lamps will work with most good quality 250w (ANSI S50) and 400w (ANSI S51) HPS ballasts.

That's pretty much the info I had.  I was looking for more personal experience to be honest.  Thanks for the information though.

Some people with CMH lamps, from what I have read, will still use HPS for flowering, if not in combination with one.

If you look at the spectrum distribution chart you can see CMH provides all the spectrum of hps at a higher level and a much greater spectrum of colors than hps.

you can certainly bud with CMH and get awesome results.
Most of the hps spectrum is in the unused yellow portion..
so you end up paying for light your plant doesnt use.

The concern I've seen is that using CMH during flowering can result with more vegetative growth and stretching, but ultimately this topic isn't something where there is a definite answer since they are pretty new.

Also, there has been just as many people saying the opposite. Just expressing what I've seen, both sides.

That's more of what I'm looking for, I am a bit low on cash since I just signed a new lease and I don't wanna spendany unnecessary money on supplies.

I've seen a side-by-side grow in which someone was using a 400 watt CMH on the left and a 400 watt HPS on the right. They definitely stretched more under the CMH; however, the CMH doesn't enjoy as much light penetration as the HPS does. At the same time, there is considerably less heat with a CMH, so you can have it a lot closer and that difference in penetration doesn't matter. Yet, the grower kept the lights at the same height (it wasn't really intended as a comparison grow).

I've seen another grow wherein a CMH was placed on one side of the plant and the HPS was placed on another, and the plant grew towards the CMH, seeking the blue light. I've read lines of thought that it takes less time for the plants to mature than with HPS, especially in vegetative growth, since the plants are getting the light they need with the CMH at much better levels. I've also read opinions that, while there is more vegetative leaf growth and everything with a CMH, this serves bud production. All in all, the grows I've seen with CMH for flowering looked great.

My friend would probably get CMH when he started growing if the bulbs were more readily available for him and if they had them in 600 watt lamps. I don't think the bulbs are any more expensive than HPS, you just have to make sure the ballast will work with them, something about pulse or something....

Anyways, what I mean to say is if you were, say, getting a 400 watt magnetic ballast, it would definitely be worth your while to get one of those bulbs; I don't think you could be disappointed.

Noted. I found a ballast plus bulb for 107 dollars so I think I will go ahead and go this route. I'll let you all know how it goes once I get started I'll set up shop in the grow diaries. Thanks guys.
