Formatting an external HD in Windows... crashed. How to make my HD work again?

I don't need to get the files back (duh), but I need to get the disk working.
No partitions are detected, however I can detect the external HD as a device.
Any way to force format it? I've got Vista as well as Linux Ubuntu that I can use.

Go into Linux then do this command on that drive:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/??? bs=512 count=100000
... where ??? is the device-code of your external drive.
Then you can go to cfdisk and create new partitions, or create them with Vista. Your choice.
If you can't find your external drive-code, then you'll have to remove it from the external case, then physically attach that drive as an internal drive (either parallel or serial ATA or SCSI).

so i'm assuming you can't find the drive in a DOS box? Because if you can, all you need to do is type format [drive letter] /q for a quick format.
