First time grow questions
    #640838 - 10/18/12 06:58 AM (12 years, 24 days ago)

I started growing around early September, after my cannabis card arrived.  I had about a dozen seeds that had come out of different strains of bud and most were planted outside.  After they sprouted, I transferred them to a pot inside.  Then, when they were bigger, I put them in their own pots.  I can't really give specifics, as I'm too new to remember the stuff...

I used this top shelf soil for the lower layer.  A hydro shop near me recommended it.  So, the bottom half is $30 per bag soil and the top half is $10 per bag soil.  I used 3 splitters and have 4 large fluorescent bulbs hanging about 1 foot above the grow.  2 are 200 watt bulbs and the other two I think are 100 watt bulbs.

They are growing in a small closet.  The timer is set for 18 hours of light.  I open the closet door in the morning and evening after work to provide some air exchange.

My question is, judging by their size and/or age, should I be doing anything differently yet?  I was going to wait until they get bigger and then transplant to 3 gallon size pots, using the $30 per bag soil to surround it.

Looks like you're doing okay so far, man... I would say maybe lower the lights a little bit. With CFL's, you can have them mere inches away from the plants without doing any harm... Just make sure you can put your hand between the bulb and the plant to test the heat. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for the plants.

As for transplanting, I would wait until they're fully established in the pot that they are in now before transplanting them again.

I will lower them tonight.  Are these 4 lights enough for flowering when it gets to that point?  And when will that be?  They say one gallon pot for a 12" plant, and the tallest plant is near that size.  Just wondering when I'll know to get bigger pots, or when to start flowering.  I don't want them to be too tall or anything.

If you want them in 5 gallons you are going to want way more lighting than what you have now.

Since I'm not going all out on the lighting or fertilizer, I'm not expecting any great harvest.  The first batch is just to find out what to expect.  I see this more as a working exercise.  If things turn out well, I may drop some money into other equipment.  I just wanted to know if you will get much by doing this on the cheap.

I would go ahead and switch them to 12/12 and start the budding processes if your not going to add any more light.

They look good and healthy.

Serious?  I thought you waited until they were a couple feet high or until you saw more leaves than 5 to start flowering.  That's one of my questions, being how do you know when it's the right time to change to 12/12.

You can do 12/12 right from seed. They will be mature and done in 8 to 9 weeks in most cases. Course you only get like an oz a plant.

But flowering is usually like 6 to 12 weeks somewhere in there from the time 12/12 is started.

The longer and bigger it vegs the more you will have.

A month or two of veg time can make quarter pound plants.

Keep in mind that it is still growing as a whole when its flowering too. So in the two months it takes to complete its bud cycle it will grow a lot.

I thought, in it's simplest form, it was veg for 2 months, bud for 2 months, dry and cure for 1 month, so it would take about 5 months total before I have any smokable bud.

here's the thing.
you veg time is going to depend on how tall you want your plants.
when you switch to 12/12
your plants will stretch up to 2-3 times in height.

Isn't there something you can do to control the plant size?  Like making the plant grow out rather than up?  How soon after switching to 12/12 can I start sexing these plants?

Okay, I just transplanted these guys to these pots about 2 weeks ago.  Do you transplant to bigger pots during the flowering stage?  Will I need to upgrade to larger pots?

i wouldn't transplant after switching to flower :2cents:
as for bigger pots.
if you are gonna run these through with the cfl's
i don't see the need to go any bigger than 2 maybe 3 gal. again:2cents:

I'm not sure about what size pots mine are, but I would guess it's less than half a gallon.  So, I guess I'll elevate the smaller plants and I'll post the status here in a week or so.  If everything is looking good, I'll switch to 12/12 around the 1st of November.
