First grow question.

Hey guys.
Finally starting my first crop.
I got my hands on some kick ass AK-47 clones. I was wondering what kind of soil should I use since I'm starting from clones? Also, I know the pot should be a good sized so that I don't have to transplant at any time, but what's the recommended size? One more question, should I put light on it right away?
Thanks for any input.

A high quality soil from your local hydro store or even home depot or lowes will have them sometimes depending where you are.
You don't want to start in too big of a pot. I start mine in rockwool cubes, and then move them to solo cups and then to pots...Every time you transplant you want to double the size of your original pot.

these are rockwool cubes. a lot of people take a cutting, dip it in rooting hormones, then stick em into the rockwool cube. after rooted, mhbound was saying he fills up a solo cup with soil, puts the clone into this soil, and then transplants into a pot thats double the size.
i recommend anything by fox farms, especially the ocean blend, if you could get your hands on it. avoid miracle grow! i like to stick my clones into 1 gallon pots and either put em into flower right away or, veg a coupla weeks and transplant to either a 2 or 3 gal pot

It all depends on how big you plan to get your plant as far as how big of a pot you want. Mine are flowered shortly after being cloned and veged for a short time.

I basically want it to yield as much as possible. I have the space, so that's not an issue. It'll just be one plant. As far as light, one should suffice right? Is it a good rule of thumb to keep it 2" above the plant? How long should it be under light when first starting?
Anything else you need to know let me know. thanks for the input

1 light should be fine...But what kind of light are we talking about first off.
I do 18 hours on and 6 hours off when vegging, and 12 hours on and 12 hours off when flowering.
Again what kind of light will determine how close you get it to the plant.

I was thinking 400 watt HPS.
Or is that too much?

Nope I have one of those bitches...Love it.
The rule of thumb I go by is to stick my hand touching the tips of the plant and if it hurts my hand then it probably isn't good for the plant...So I move it higher until it doesn't hurt. It isn't really going to hurt but burn...You'll know what I'm talking about. I keep it there for awhile and if everything looks fine then you're good to go. You'll know pretty soon if it needs to be higher...Just keep an eye on the tops of your plants.
With a 400 hps getting real close isn't of a huge concern you have plenty of light with that. So don't try to get it too close be safe...It's not worth burning up your plant. Get you some reflective mylar if you have the cash and line the walls that will help with lighting as well.

Cool, thanks for the info.
What's the general rule of thumb for veg time and flower time?

You veg until you have it to the size you want. You could flower the clone basically as soon as you get it. Keep in mind your plant will grow another foot or so in height before it's done once you initiate flowering.

Also stick it in 1 more pot when you initiate flowering just to ensure it doesn't or isn't root bound...I do anyway.

This is what I'm thinking, I put the clone in the soil pot, veg for say, a month and a half, then switch to flower for a few weeks til the buds are beautiful. Sound right?

Well...AK-47 is between 8-9 weeks indoors I believe for flowering if I'm not mistaken. It's been over 3 years since I did an AK plant.
So close to 2 months for flowering. That damn plant is going to be massive.

general rule of thumb is that your plant at the very least doubles, and sometimes even triples, its size when switching from flowering to veg. So, if you flower a one foot tall plant expect it to hit 2-3 feet during the flowering cycle.
