If you grew this strain before, and now the buds are smaller, fill out the doctor's diagnosis thing. Is there other symthoms except small buds?
Pics would help.

That's bullshit. You can get great decent sized buds from a 400 HPS.

I'ma bet its air circulation and co2. I have trouble getting dense buds myself because of this problem.

In my experience density is more a square foot to watt issue. Air flow could be an issue, tho.
The OP is most likely ready to move up his feeding. By this I mean using the Koolblooms both liquid and dry. Made a huge difference in my gardens. The lucas formula can only take one so far.

If it's burning your plants use it at a lower concentration and you will probably get better results.

Of course your going to get more bud from more light. But that doesn't mean that's what his problem is. This person could be having a genetics issue, nutrient problems, air exchange issues. Just telling him to upgrade his light is ignorant.
A 400 watt light can give you plenty big buds.

I love how you don't even acknowledge that I'm calling you out on not even really being helpful to the OP.
Of course you can get big buds from a 400 watt light. Your YIELDS aren't going to be as good as with a 1000 watt light. But you can still get decent size buds if you know what your doing. And now I'm done arguing with you and derailing this guys post.

Isn't there some point where the wattage is negligible? I mean, if you're in a 3 x 5 closet, running a 1000 in there just seems like overkill. I thought the larger wattages were just to spread more light evenly over a larger amount of space.
If not, then why not have a 1000 for every plant? Besides space restrictions and heat issues, and money issues, etc.
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

@ Jboogs, its only 22 question to answer then your issues with small buds will probably be over! and @ RasJef I totally agree with more watt = more space or its overkill you would bake those ladies!

Thank you all.
although I have 7 plants left, 6 are hydro and 1 is an auto in soil.
I won't be upgrading my light too soon given that i grew denser bud under flros The 400 watt light is sufficient for the 2X3 area
After evaluating my own variables...I am in 100% agreement with Ras y Stoneth... I need CO2 in my garden as well as a better variety of foods. I can't eat oatmeal everyday and I shouldnt expect my loves to either...
The good thing is, I can take clones from 3 of these mujeres, add some blue mystics and freebies and do it again properly.
Buuuuuut......
Soil Growers: 1. Are you growing from seed or clones? Seeds and Clones...3 Northern Lights Autos, 4 [X] 2. How old are your plants? Autos-73 days, clones-40 days flower since cut 3. How tall are your plants? all are maintained at 1.5 to 2ft. Looking for budsicles 4. What size containers are they planted in? 3 gal and 2.5 gal 5. What is your soil mix? FFOF hpoo, verm, perl, spent mushie sub 6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use? Twice every 1.5 weeks...one feeding, 1 salt flush 7. What is the pH of your water? Betwixt 5.9-6.5 8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio? FNova 4-8-7 9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything? Not during flower 10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? 400Watt HPS + 65 watt CFL 11. How close are your lights to the plants? all plants are within 6in of the light except an auto that is 1ft away but 1in away from cfl 12. What size is your grow space in square feet? 7ft^2 13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space? 85%humidity 75degC 14. What is the pH of the soil? 6.4 15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space? Fawking gnats 16. How much experience do you have growing? 5th grow, but my 1st-4th grows were with garden specific equipment, this grow makes use of all hand built and tweaked eq...ie customized warehouse lighting, lowes and hd pvc growbox with blck/white poly skin, comp fans...etc.
No CO2, but one way (dry ice, fermentation bottle) or another (tanks or horticulture buckets) Im going to add it, im going to get some get some get some get some - Blondie

Instead of adding the dry ice/fermentation option, just get a bigger exhaust fan. If your getting enough fresh air coming into your garden there is no need to produce co2.
At grod31, I run a 1000 watt light per 2 plants.

I read that co2 air concentration is lower when it is cold, as it is where I am now. Regardless though, co2 and light are essential for fruit production si? So it would behoove me to either up my light and/or add a consistent co2 injection source,si o no? Nutes and supplements are a given. I was actually thinking of upping my light to a 600...but I have seen some super grows with 250s and 400s.
I suppose I am trying to find the limiting factor. My plants grew fine in veg, but the flower is lacking.... now that I have taken the cheap route for setup... I think im gonna reinvest in my setup and go again with a round of autos and a couple clones. trials and errors.
First things first tho, I need to find an intermediate glog to imitate.....

400 watts is plenty for a 7 square foot grow space.
To me it looks like you over complicating your soil. Just use straight FFOF. No need for those additives.
Since your only using computer fans for air circulation I would put money that if you just upgrade your air exchange you would improve the bud growth. At this point it would not do you any good to upgrade your light.

I'm with Haxk on this one. There is more than enough co2 in nature for the plants to preform well. 13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space? 85%humidity 75degC The humidity is very high for a flower room, this could cause mold and/or mildew. I'd try to get that down to aground 55% asap.
What sie exhaust fan are you running? Also any ideas on what the EC of your mix was for your hydro plants?

He said he was using computer fans. So I'm guessing that there is VERY little air exchange. Just getting a decent inline or squirrel cage would do the trick.

Yeah its pretty cold here so yeah, i suppose their is low constant air exchange....
However, in a similar space I nurtured 9 decently thick sicles of bubblicious...
Soil: someone told me that earlier...i was coming off a mushroom purge and decided to use those supplies for this project hence the hpoo and verm. unfortunately it was too late for her.
Humidity: Cool, I have a dehumidifier that has just been sitting, ill throw it in there and see what transpires...ha...transpires as in transpiration hahaha im hilarious...
so I should let the 17 degree air into my garden???

For the record, CO2 is almost NEVER the issue unless it's a subsidiary problem from merely having poor air flow.

Fahrenheit, yes, it was actually 28 today soooooo....
Ok so CO2 is only a problem if you have your garden in an enclosed space with the only inlet of fresh air being a vent with air so cold that you cover it to keep your plants from freezing??? or do i need an air temperature regulator for the in?

You could put a small space heater in the room to make sure it doesn't get to cold. But air exchange is one of the most important things to address. Plants need a fresh air supply.
