"12/1" light cycle
    #596606 - 11/11/11 03:07 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I tend to take most things from popular cannabis mags with a grain of salt, and usually do a little research before applying it to my grows.

I read a recent issue that had an article about a "12/1" light cycle, that is, 12hrs on, 5.5 off, 1hr on, 5.5 off, repeat, iirc for the vegatative growth cycle. He claims to have brought a cutting of a sativa into his grow op, using this light method, and it did NOT induce flowering or stress related issues.

The internodes on that sativa he was showing off was something worth looking into, exspecially since i have a few landrace strains i would like to work with indoors. on top of that, heat becomes less of a problem, and also power consumption. One would save quite a bit of money eliminating those issues, and therefore be a little less sketchy looking on the power bill, or heat scans, or w/e a grower can worry about.

The author says he is just applying a technique used by commercial veggie farmers and flower producers.

Even if the results were just slightly subpar...i think it would be worth removing that kind of carbon footprint and wear and tear on my hortilux bulbs!

here's the figures he gives (skunk Vol 7 iss. 3)
-up production by 25-35%
-lower production cost 50-75%

Procedure:
12 ON, 5.5 OFF, 1 ON, 5.5 OFF, he references greenhouse management and operation by paul nelson for all his stats btw.

Anyone have exp. with this? Further reading?

Wear and tear on the bulbs eh?

I dunno if its just me, but I feel like I remember reading something about firing the bulbs more often being more detrimental to their lifespan than actually leaving them running.

And IDK, I'll pass. I just do 24/0 with veg...its so much easier and I don't have to worry about it.

I wouldnt do 24/0 reguardless, not my style

He states in there it actually doesnt cause extra wear and tear, or that may have been in another vid or related article.

Ah. Well, more power to ya, certainly. Just not for me is all :vaped:

I don't like to over complicate things...one more place to fuck up. If you've got it under control though, I'm sure it works fine. I've seen people discussing this on lots of forums. I dunno, I guess I'm too set in my ways

sounds to me like it would be worse on the bulbs too

There is a lot of truth to your post.
The plants don't flower because they don't get a full 12 hrs of darkness.
For some reason plants seem to prefer shorter periods of light.

I remember years ago Dr. Ed stated in one of his articles that the best veg cycle he tested was 3 hrs on and 1 hr off.  I tested this myself and will agreed the plants grew much faster all the way around.  At some points gaining three to four inches a day upward and outwards.  It was like nothing I've done since.  But I was going thru two bulbs monthly.  For that reason alone, I choose to go back to 18/6 in my veg rooms.  Turning bulbs off and on does more damage than it's worth in the end.

I'd love to test out some autoflower strains on one of these cycles, they might yeild better.  But that's just a guess for now.

What about CFL's? Lotsa people veg with them (myself included).

I can't imagine it'd stress them too much...I can see MH getting stressed though. Ballast and bulb.

CFLs would be cheaper to replace for sure.
I don't like them myself, I feel the growth rate is to slow per watt.

Yea, i'm also vegging under t5's, and flowering under HPS, so im not worried about the bulbs. I think i may try this starting tomorrow.

People flick on and off cfls all the time (they are in our houses!) without any trouble, and they are cheap enough....

as for "why fix what isnt broke"

Well, current grow conditions are broken. Not energy efficient at all. This fixes that. And if it improves growth, it is always worth looking into, because isnt that what we all want? the healthiest plants?

I would love to grow outdoors, but you know how it is, so i grow indoors, wich fucks with my carbon footprint, and cost of living. We could all use a little more energy efficiency in our lives, and so could the planet, and thats not even hippy bullshit, thats just fact.

I'll be watching this thread. Let us know how it goes, DrTrich.
I once saw a growlog that used half days for veg. Eg 9hrs on, 3hrs off.
He reported that his plants grew quicker. Although I didn't follow the thread so i have no idea how it worked out for him in the end.

Curious to see if its something i may wanna try one day.

Cheers
MagickZ

What about rooting?? Would the 3/1 cycle work for rooting clones? I'm considering trying this as well...

I don't see any reason it wouldn't.
Tho I admit I never tried it myself.

Cuttings don't really need light for a day or two after being cut anywho. And they can do suprisingly well in low light situations while developing roots, once back in vegatative state, then light becomes more important. IME.(plus aloooot of reading and talking to the dro shop boys)

Also, the other problem i see with cycles that are really short like, 1-3 hrs on, w/e off, repeat...is that just because a light is hitting a leaf, doesnt meant that it is optimally using that light energy. It takes (IIRC) about 20 minutes for them to "wake up" and start using most wavelengths. Just like it takes us (some of us longer) a bit to get going, and we dont fall asleep RIGHT when the light cuts out either.

IMHO, that is too hectic, but if applying the same principles as human sleep cycles, and taking into account "sleep cycleing" or "sleep dieting" working with us, kinda changing how long the processes take to start up and whatnot, it might work for our girls too. i just dont like the idea of it. not enough is known. (to me at least)

just my two cents.

I'm looking into trying this in the near future... there's also an accompanying theory called Diminishing Light Technique. It points out that cannabis, along with pointsettas, marigolds and a few others, is a short day flowring plant. Meaning they prefer LESS than 12 hours of light. I've read a couple logs on THCfarmer.com about it, and it seems to give good results. The guy went from 12 hours of light to 11, then down to 10. He said it really helped phenotypes express themselves better, and resin production was insane!

Link?  And have they been doing side by side comparison grows.  I'm always skeptical about these claims.  It always seems like they never have really done enough decent controlled experiments to make it anything more than anecdotal evidence at best.

That seems like its complicating things a bit but I'm a newb yet.  Seems to me it would make for buying bulbs and/or  ballasts more often  somebody do some side by sides and show us.
