"Topping" the plants?

Been watching the "I grow chronic" videos by Mr. Green & seen he did something what he called "top" the plants?
You clip a top piece off & you get two buds to grow?
It only makes sense to me since you'll get more in the end, but do you just do this to the very top of each plant, or where all big buds are?
Are there any negatives to "topping" the plant?

you pinch in vegetation state. but you can pinch the buds too. id advice against it, if you have never grown before..
Right now I have a bunch of adults in flowers for sexing, weeded the males out and let them bloom for 2weeks pinching all the bud sites and now they are back in 18/6 veg. branching Ive found is better this way. Im not going to try a million other thing. These will push many thin branches out and Ill clone those.. But I had plenty of budding tops. I need more plants from these bitches though..

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing?
Watch this video starting at 5:35 and let me know if that's what you're referring to.

What orison is talking about is called fimming not topping. Read this thread it covers everything you need to know

I think topping or FIM makes sense to do considering it will increase yield.
So from my understand, topping is just done to the top part, where as FIM is a method used on the whole plant in order to increase yield on the entire plant?
I would be doing a SCROG method to increase yields & also want to incorporate the FIM procedure to really bring yields up.
Anyone know of good videos for this FIM method? I'm usually a visual learner...
