Topping is when you cut off top node of your plant to redistribute the hormones. It causes the side branches to accelerate and you end up with a short, bushy plant.

If done at the right time it can also cause two main colas to form instead of one.

As Penguin noted, topping (cutting) the main stem (typically at the top node) of the plant, will cause the two side stems to become the new main stalks. There is no technical limit to how many times you can top a plant (though there is a practical limit as too much topping can create such small colas that you will not yield as much); the more you top, the shorter/bushier the plant will be.
If you are growing only one plant and do not have a lot of vertical space (height) available in your grow area, topping can effectively keep the canopy of your plant at lower level, allowing the side branches time to catch up to the main colas, so that you have more bud-producing branches at a closer distance to the light source, thereby increasing overall yield.
You can see in this picture how the plant does not have one main center stalk, but instead branches out.
This was accomplished through topping (in fact, this particular plant was topped twice - can you see where?):

so u toppped the plant then u top the branches? and that makes colas how long does this usually take? i had mine 6 months and nothing except a good smell and no buds. i think imma start over outside.

topping does not create cola's. it does force the top to split and form 2 tops instead of just 1. as far as having a plant for 6 months and nothing happening other then good smell. if you want buds your gonna have to lessen the light your plant is getting, force her to bud. If your indoor growing, then cut your light cycle to 12 hrs on and 12 off.
not sure the set up you have or where, but by your comments of starting over outdoors makes me think your a closet grower?? do some research too, there is plenty of grow sites on the net. lots of good reading also in the magazine stands.
