Anyone brew up some mead?

So I brew up some nasty swish on a regular basis, but now that I'm going to be legally able to buy my own drank (soon enough), I'd like to have something that is a bit more...tasty.
It should be ready to drink right about my birthday.
Does anyone have a particularly good recipe? I know I can google it, but I'd rather have some first hand info if ya have it.

Sugar + yeast + water. Turbo yeast, done fermenting in 24 hours, settles out in 5 days and you're ready to forget what happened last night.
Tastes terrible though.

I use to make mead. I loved adding fruit to it, I made a bach one time where I added more watermelon then other fruit and it gave it an amazing taste of liquorish. Then there was the blueberry mead, apple and pears. It takes a while for mead to finish fermenting though. I do not remember exactly how long, I think it was 3-4 months maybe longer.

I was gonna give it 5 and drink the first bottle on my birthday (April 20th, yeah. Lol.)
I was planning on using orange blossom honey and an orange in the brew
Thanks for the tip. Did you just use yeast or did you go all out and get the nutrient and energizer? The recipes I've looked up have all been about 50/50.

I just used yeast. It was an active yeast, so All you had to do is mix it into warm water, let sit and let the yeast wake up and then you are good to go. If you are going to get heavy into mead making then why not use the energizer etc. But if it is just for hobby, or every so often then I see no need for it imo. But I'm sure it would aid in better fermenting...
"using orange blossom honey and an orange in the brew" Sounds good, Can't wait to hear how it turns out.

Do u have a carboy??? the big glass thing to fermite in.. i make lots of wine.. u can make some decent strong wine with welchs grape juice. i use like 9 cans welchs 100 % purple grape, and one can 100% cranberry juice. 4.5 or 5 gallons water.. sugar yeast..do u have a hydrometer? set it up so it will finish in the 14 to 18% alcohol.. level good stuff. one beer bottle full is like 2 beers..

^Listen to this man, wine is your easiest solution to drinkable alcohol.
I've brewed my own beer before, if I was more of an alcoholic I would do it again.

I know the proper ways to brew, I've always just done it the ghetto way because I cared more about the end result than the process of getting there (taste).
I vaguely remember my dad brewing beer when he lived here. Mostly because he fucked up and bottled it too early and the shit exploded all over my computer and I couldn't play my DOS games
I'm thinking I'll be making up a real small batch of mead, prolly only 1-2 gallons for a first try. Then I'll tweak it from there until I get one I like, and then mass produce it

You can literally ferment anything that is not toxic. Throw in a couple of pounds of fruit, berries, whatever per 3-5 gal H2O, mash em up seeds, skins and all. You can use any cheep frozen/canned stuff providing it doesn't have preservatives that are going to kill your yeast. Add one orange or two lemons, not so much for flavor but to kill any harmful bacteria. Get a champaign yeast and add as much sugar/honey as the yeast can handle. Brew that sucker out for 5-7 days and rack it into a carboy (a plastic water bubbler works great and doesn't mess up the flavor).Put a balloon over the top with a tiny pinhole if you don't have an air lock. Champaign yeast will ferment really dry leaving you with about 22% alcohol. If you like your grog a little sweet add more sugar after fermentation. For a twist add a little cinnamon or clove, walnuts, apple wood, whatever to the brew.

Forgot to mention: One real ghetto method that is cool for parties is to take a large pumpkin, carve out the top, dump your water, sugar, yeast right into the pumpkin, put the top back on and stuff it in a trash bag for a few days. Just plop the whole pumpkin on the table when ready to serve.

I still get a chuckle every time I read the title of this thread. Sounds so medieval or something.
