bulbs and ballasts

i want to start an indoor garden and have questions about efficiency in lighting. Im interested in CFL's and self ballasted HID's. I havnt had much luck finding cfl's with good output; greater than 45W 6500K. I have seen a great range of color rendering and power output with self ballasted HID lamps.
What gives me the best lumen per watt, and how do i get the highest color temperature and color rendering?
Im unfamiliar with HPS, metal halide and mercury vapor lamps; mostly because of the need for an external ballast.
Is one powerful bulb better than surround sound lighting?
sorry so many questions but light is tough, and im no physisist

I would recommend using Metal Halides for the vegging phase of MJ growth and HPS lamps for the flowering phase. If you only want one bulb for the whole thing use an HPS. Remote ballasts are better because they move heat generation away from your garden. If you are doing a very small scale grow (1 or 2 small plants and under 150 watts total) you can get away with using CFLs (6500K for vegging and 2700K for flowering).

i was hoping not to have to change bulbs from veg. to flowering just because of how i want my setup; indica plants maybe 3 ft. cubical. And if i had cfl or simply T8's i would incorporate side lighting as well which also keeps a short bushy plant.

IF you do stick with only CFL's, and you don't want to change bulbs, go with Cool White (4,100 K) bulbs for the whole grow. But it would be good to switch one or more bulbs for a red spectrum during flowering.

What I might not have made clear in my first post is that for most situations, using more than 150 watts of CFLs is way less efficient than using a 150 watt HPS.
