CFL bulb Question

Product found here
400w/105w actual CFL bulbs
6500k
5000 lumens
in a 2x3x5" area
Would 4 of these really give the output of 2x 1000w lights?
any opinions on if you could veg 4-6 plants on these in a SOG style grow, and then switch over to 4x 2700k cfl's of the same wattage?

Unless the 4 plants are pretty small I would keep it down to 1-2 plants. And no 4 bulbs would not equal what they're trying to claim. I'm not sure of how they come up with the equivalent wattage, but it's not really equal to HID wattage

ok i'm just gonna order a nice HID instead. it just seemed stupid if home depot carried cfls that actually put out 2000w of light for under 100 dollars.
thanks for the quick response.

I was going to use CFL's at first but the more I read the more I saw that if you want good results go with what works the best. MH and HID lights work the best. May cost more but well worth the investment.

You mean MH and HPS, both are forms of HID lighting.

Just get a 400W HPS, they have conversion bulbs to run MH in HPS or just get a ballast that does both HPS and MH.

its already on its way
I'm building my own cooltube/reflector and carbon filter as well.
i have a bid on a pyrex bake around (speaking of which does anyone know if pyrex scratches or stains? i dont think it does but id hate to get it and find out its not clear enough to use) and i also put out some feelers on free samples of clear tubing.
I will start a growlog as soon as i know whether or not these clones are going to thrive

if you use 25 40 watts cfl,s witch equals a 1000 watts your lumens out put will be 65000 lumens witch is haft the power of a 1000 watt high pressure sodium lamp, same wattage but haft the lumens ,hps is the best bang for you buck ,but the cfl,s are better for a vary small grow in a small enclosed space ,for you wont have a heat problem you would have with the hps!

He says MH and HID and you correct him saying MH and HPS are HID lights.
What about Mercury vapor? ceramic metal halides? xenon? sulphur plasma? etc.
Cheers!

Never seen anyone use these for growing, maybe why I didn't mention them.

Actually, I just read an article where sulphur plasma bulbs were touted as the next amazing grow invention. They couldn't rave enough about the quality of light and high output, I really want to give them a try. CMH have been used for years, Magash has tried them, Koons likes them and I think Yrat did a run with them too. Very high Color Rendering Index and good output but extremely hot bulbs so they haven't caught on that well yet.
Xenon, Halogen and Mercury Vapor are as useless as a rubber crutch however.

CMH are sometimes called Cool Metal halides. This is because they run cooler than metal halides or high pressure sodium bulbs. Maybe the total heat from the bulb and the core and coil ballast would make more heat than the total of a 400w HPS or metal halide and a digital ballast :p

It's in this month's issue of Rosebud magazine, not sure if you can find it online but try googling it.

Actually you are right. Not sure what kind of bulb I was thinking of but you're right I do remember that now.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the ballast combo makes the CMH hotter than a HPS or even MH.

Interesting, link please!
I knew there were many different forms, just only listed the ones I felt were grow related. I love to read up on these others tho.
