400 w in 2.5x2.5x5 cab

Is a light like this overkill in a cab this size? I've read some conflicting things. It seems that some of the TCs around here would recommend nothing less (I could be mistaken), yet, on other sites like Garden's Cure and icmag, I see that most are using 125 watt's for cabs this size. If one can manage the heat with a cool tube set up, exhausting in to a large dining room, why go with a 125 or 250 over a 400? Lower risk of burning your crib down or what?

I think even a 150w is going to burn your place down just as fast as a 400w if it's not handled and vented properly. And I don't think it's over kill at all, Magash just said 1kw per 4x4 space in another thread so that's on par.

Of course, I'm only speculating. They may be aware of something I'm not.

Because like you said, it could be over kill. I mean if you can afford to run the 400 over a 250w or the lesser 125w go for it. But depending on amount of plants in the space, it could be to much light , too much heat and more electricity usage then you need. Plants can only use so much of the light you give them for photosynthesis.

But given this-

And the 400 should surely outperform the lesser lights in the original dimensions mentioned, no?

As long as you keep it cool 400 watts will do a job in a cab that size man.
My cab isn't much different in size than yours and I use a 400 watt super HPS bulb.
My room is 3x2x5.

I am going to be running a 400w in a 2'x4'x5'
The biggest concerns of mine are going to be keeping the thing cool. That's why I am spending a little extra money and getting a vented hood.

I use a 190 cfm fan and air cooled hood myself.
Works out great 75 degrees within 6 inches of the bulb itself.

Sweet. Im picking up a Cool Tube tomorrow with a 400w Lumatek Digital Ballast for $200. I found it on Craigslist. I love living in a MMJ state. Craiglist is flooded with people trying to sell clones and everything. I also found a really cheap fan + filter combo on eBay. Its 190 CFM.
Check it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300391321952&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Its nice. I am getting my license for free because I am signing a guy and his partner over as my caregiver. He is paying for it all. Even with him being my caregiver I can still legally grow 6 plants, and some of my friends are getting their license and they would put me down as their caregiver, giving me the right to grow 6 more plants.
Lol.
Speaking of mushrooms, I have 5 quarts of Ecuador ready to spawn. I need to make some substrate.

Absolutely.
Some people are concerned about consuming more power than what's needed to grow their grow. However, I would think that as the plant progresses and grows larger it will consume more and more light. I mean you'll be wasting power and light at some point during the grow - seedlings don't eat as much light as a meter tall plant for example. Obviously, the more plants you can get in there, the more efficiently you can use the light.
