The problem is hypothetical at this point. But I'm considering the noise created by a fan blowing through ducts, and wondering what techniques may be available to dampen it.
Or perhaps no dampening is required.. I don't know.

using insulated ducting is supposed to reduce noise somewhat and I saw a thread about building a muffler out of hardware cloth and fiber-glass insulation. i looked but can't find it right now. you can also find them for sale online.

I just built a muffler. Used a 45 gallon tub.
Works great.
Is this the link you referred to?

Insulated air ducting will reduce the sound of air flowing through the ducts considerably. The higher the Rvalue. The thicker the insulation. Insulated ducting with a Rvalue of six is common. R-8 is double insulated.
The source of most of your noise is going to be from your fan. There are several solutions for muffling the sound of your fan. Depending on what kind of fan you are planning on using.
I noticed you said this problem is hypothetical at this point. Do you have an idea of what kind of fan you will be using? Do you have an idea of what size fan your grow show will require?

It's going to be a cabinet. I'm anticipating about 3x2x5 feet.. give or take a bit. I was thinking just one exhaust, which would serve to cool the light through a tube as well. I figure, if only one fan will be used, might as well spend the bucks (up to $200 max) and get something with a high CFM that'll hopefully be damn near silent. Any recommendations? Or do you think a cheaper fan could easily be made just as quiet? What are peeps' opinions on this?

Get a 6" Soler & Palau inline fan. I hear that they are the quietest on the market. I'll let you know in about 2 days. I just got one and have to pick it up tomorrow. They are like $130-40 now. The price JUST dropped across the net. I paid $155.
