New Investments/New Closet

I managed to convince my friend that he should start growing in his closet (was reading Seed-boutique's motto about a pack of free seeds to pay it forward to someone else, so they may grow).
He says he is willing to invest up to $500.
So... I started looking around and found these for him, what do you think?
1. 600W Digital ballast with Cooltube 2. 250 cfm 6" fan 3. Carbon scrubber 4. Stuck on what medium to use... I have experience with DWC, Ebb & Flow and soil. I know it is first time but I am basically going to be supervising.. should I break him into hydro now? I am a big fan of hydro!
By the way, the space in his closet is about (LxWxH) 6'x25"x6'
How many plants... I was thinking if I go hydro, maybe in 5 gallon buckets and having 6 plants?
Would love some feedback. I already gave him a butt-load of articles and saved documents I have accumulated over the course of my horticulture fetish.
Nightgrower, will now take comments, suggestions and even complaints.

Thanks again Harry, I have seen that log recently and must say, growing aero looks like fun.
Hmmmm... It almost feels like my grow.

well, do you have full frontal access to the space? If so, and you want to use 5 gal buckets, just get some fox farm soil, easy to water if you can have full frontal access. if not, on to reservoirs lol

I do have frontal access, but I am also obsessed with low-maintenance/automation.
I told my friend everything said here and he decided to go with the aero setup. It looks just like Frizzlemans from the journal.
But... all this excitement about someone elses grow prompted me to buy some Mandala - Hashberry seeds last night.
I think I might just do a 5gal bucket setup. Either a combo of FFOF and Perlite or straight Hempy Bucket.
I will keep post the grow journal when the seeds arrive.
