You can grow anywhere from 1-4 plants depending on your method of growing.
I'd go 150 w hps. But then you'd need ample ventilation.
I've seen decent yields come out of grow areas smaller than 3x3x3; a couple ounces (~2 oz., I don't really remember).
You could use CFL's, too, if you're growing on a budget. They are less wattage, but Magash can tell you how much he hates them.

well what do you guys think im thinking 3x3 or 4x4 but im new to lights and im trying to stay on a very tight budget what would be the cheapest lamp for me to use i mean i dont want to raise my electric bill more than an extra 10 a month im using soil

It's really on you.
With HID, you get tight, compact buds that are sure to please.
With CFL's, you can still get nice nugs, but you have to know what you're doing.
Also, HID comes with extra baggage: higher temps, higher expenses. Thus, you'd need to invest more money in your grow for proper ventilation and lighting.
CFL's are relatively easy to set up. They don't create too much heat and they aren't expensive.
You could go CFL, and then step it up to HID (hps/mh).
It's all up to you and how you want your grow to be.

go 4x4 with a 400w hps. use compact fluorescents for seedling and early veg. a moderate investment in equipment pays for itself many times over come harvest time.

What is your goal? Start to finish in this space? Or vegging? Or flowering? Or cloning? The Amount of light necessary and the lighting that can be used varies some for these variations. And also 10$ a month might be an understatement if you wanna light that 3x3 up optimally.

a 4x4 room would be best when outfitted with a 600 watt light. 400 watt HPS would work better in a 3x3 or smaller area.

get a 4x4 tray and 1000w hps. 16 plants, 1 per square foot. works good for me.

look up you local electricity rates:
For a 600W light assuming 18/6 veg and 12/12 flower photoperiod:
for veg: rate*334.8 per month for a 31 day month
for flower: rate*223.2 per month for 31 day month
Note: units for the rate should be in $/kilowatt hour Kilowatt hour will be abbreviated Kwh rate should be somewhere around .10-.20 $/kilowatt hour in the US
also...most HPS lamps run at a luminous efficiency of about 100 lumens/watt
and at 555nm average, a watt of 555nm visible light is equal to 683 lumens
so for a 600W light, running at 100 lumens/watt, only 88W of that are going to visible light...and only 30% max of that is absorbed by the plant and stored as chemical energy, the rest bounces around and is eventually converted to heat, as is the remaining 512W being used by the light. So when you are thinking about ventilation and cooling of this grow space, if you are using a 600W HPS, make sure you have enough ventilation to keep it cool if you were running a 570W electric heater in the grow room. Of course these are all based off of some key assumptions, and im sure there are more efficient lights that give off a spectrum that will cater more to the plant...so you maybe be able to find a 600W bulb that will only put out 500W of heat. Just something to think about.
good luck sir, agmotes165

think you got your decimal points mixed up there.
Should be closer to 33.48 a month for 24/0 veg and 22.32 for 12/12.
Lets do the math one more time.
600 Watt HPS = .6 KW's (600 watts/ 1000 watts = .6) .6KWH * 24 Hrs = 14.4 KWH per day 14.4 KWH * $.07 = $1.008 per day $1.008 * 30 Days = $30.24 a month for a 600 watt lamp running 24 hours a day
.6KWH * 12 hrs = 7.2 KWH Per day 7.2 KWH * $.07 = $.504 per day $.504 * 30 days = $15.12 a month for a 600 watt lamp running 12 hrs a day

That's off too, my $/KWH rate is .03 Most people pay around .07 or less per KWH

actually i didn't...
my calc is the going rate of electricity in dollars per KWH times the number given...which is the kilowatt hours per month that i calculated.
for 18/6 photoperiod and 31 day month:
(600W * 558 hrs per month) = 334800 Watthours (334800Wh / 1000 W/KW) = 334.8 KiloWattHours Total cost per 31 Day month during veg = Rate * 334.8 KWH
for 12/12 photoperiod and 31 day month:
(600W * 372 hrs per month) = 223200 Watthours (223200Wh / 1000 W/KW) = 223.2 KiloWattHours Total cost per 31 Day month during flowering = Rate * 223.2 KWH
My math is based off of the individual's going rate of electricity, so it has no room for error in the assumption of rate.
so for a 24/0 photoperiod and a 30 day month,
Cost = Rate * 432 KWH
ad for a 12/12 photoperiod on a 30 day month,
Cost = Rate * 216 KWH
if you plug in ur .07 $/KWH into my equations, you will get the exact same answers that you got.
And you have an incredible rate for electricity sir, mine is upwards of .1012 $/KWH, I envy you
peace, agmotes165
