I was also told that for the space I have available a 250 Watt Hid Light would be more efficient for the heat build up .
Thoughts ?

I am not super experienced at growing but i can tell you that you will want more drainage in your soil (especially indoors). Maybe use perlite instead of the coir. If you only want 5 plants then a 250 watt should be enough. You will not need a heating pad for anything. What strains are available to you (how do you plan on getting seeds / clones)?

Ask the people at the dispensary for something easy to grow in your setup. Let them know that you are inexperienced. If they seem like they dont know what they are talking about then see what strains they have and research them on this and other forums. You could probably search on growery and other forums for information on the strains available at the clubs in your area and even find grow reports. .

I think mushroom compost is for amending soil not your base? Am i wrong?

My only advice is to buy a decent ph meter, even if it means downsizing your light or other supplies to do so. You will reap the benefits with healthy lush green plants.

i wouldnt try and do a soil grow right off. you should consider doing coco coir handwatered. for that you would need
coco coir - (cheap!) 1L GH Flora Bloom ($10) 1L GH Flora Micro ($15) ph test drops, or a ph meter a way to measure nutrients by the ml (syringe, graduated cylinder, whatever)
you then use the h3ad formula. 6ml micro and 9ml bloom per gallon of water, ph adjust it to 5.8, and water your plants with that exact mix every day. once halfway through the flowering period (depends on your strain) you cut out micro and just give the 9ml bloom. then a week before projected harvest you can just give it pure water. you'll get great results that way with absolutely NO guesswork.
thats what scares me about noobs using soil is you are doing a lot of guessing and assuming. with handwatered coco you can very easily do the exact right thing.
as far as ventilation, you need to be able to get your air out somewhere, so that means a hole in the ceiling, wall, or door. you also need a source of fresh air, so another hole, or if the door has a huge gap below it that works. you probably want a 4" inline fan for the 250w hps. you can skimp and jerry rig things, but heat will fuck over everything no matter how good you do the rest of the grow. keeping the room cool is your key to happy plants which produce good yields and dense buds.

What you say is pretty full proof it looks like . But I've done alot of reseach on soil mixes and the proper ratios for drainage, nutrients,etc.. But you do make a great point for a cheap and easy first grow . Perhaps I'll do both ? that way if one fails I have your method to fall back on . Thanks a bunch ! Right on sounds good thanks for the tips and the PM We'll be in touch !
From now on I'm just going to ammend the first post I made :p
