And suppose you had just broken the top off one of your favorite plants. But I repeat myself.

Anyhoo, yeah - I broke a good four inches off the top of one of my plants in the flowering stage.  I treated it like a clone and got it in some water as quickly as possible.

I've never tried to force a plant back into veg after it started flowering, but I'd like to feel like breaking this off wasn't a total fuckup.  I figure if I can make it root it is only a 90% fuck up.

Am I likely to encounter any special problems trying to root this top? Is there anything in particular I need to do that is different than what I'd do to root a cutting taken in the veg stage?

Here's what I have now - it is in the clone tent in a jar with an air stone and a weak nute solution.  Take more leaves or leave it alone?

Leave it alone for a day or two, maybe three. Give it a chance.

Thats what I do.

Cut off the top third of the fan leaves. A simple cloning pictorial will help you envision what I'm saying. You should be able to find one here or on Google.

You can certainly revert that clone back into vegging.

Put a air stone in the water and change the water every day and I can just about grantee that it will root.

most of the time when i get clones they have some of the fan leafs cut off i always thought they just cut it off because there was something wrong with the leaf or something. how does cutting of part of the leaf benefit the cloning process?

Cutting off part of the leaves is beneficial in the cloning process because it reduces the rate of transpiration in the leaf so the plant uses less water. The clone has no roots so less transpiration, less stress.
