what would happen if i skipped the veg stage and put seedlings outside right away to flower? i know that i would have alot less buds but besides that is there any other downsides?

No, it will only result in smaller plants. It is done by many growers, you just need more plants to fill the same area.

So you could grow a plant to be about 12'' tall after a full flower cycle with no veg cycle? Would it bud correctly or would it be a mini-bud on the top cola?

I have heard this is often done when growing sativas indoors where space is limited. Does anyone care to elaborate on this?

It's skipped to keep plants small and to harvest sooner.
Some 12/12 from seed/clone sativas to keep them managable.
Some 12/12 full indica's to make a very full and dense canopy to optimize yield in the fastest amount of time "Sea of Green"

Yield will be maximized if you're growing a indica or any strain that has a single cola formation like Magash's plants posted above have.
Fully canopy = more yield Fully canopy of large plants = more popcorn buds

??
sorry guys. if you're growing from seeds, you can't just skip veg and go straight into flower. the plant has to reach sexual maturation before it can go into flowering. my house mate right now had some bag seeds that he sowed a month or 2 ago and they are just stunted seedlings with a couple set of true leaves (i could maybe go take pictures if you guys want).
HOWEVER! if you have cuttings, than as soon as they are rooted, you can induce flowering.

Nah dude
people 12/12 sativa's all the time.
it's probably a lot better to let roots develop but people 12/12 sativa's from seeds all the time!

plants have to reach sexual maturation before able to flower. im preeeeettttttttty sure anyways. i'll go check up on the roof right now and tell you how these 1 - 2 month old sprouts are doing.

I've never 12/12'd a seed before but if you look over at ICMAG or Mr Nice's forums you'll see many people do. The plants still end up huge too.

The sex of the plant is determined before it ever pops the seed. Genetics is genetics. Now if this wasn't true femed seeds could not be done.
Pure sativas can be flowered very early cause they have a 3 month and more flowering time. Remember though its not gonna work so well with South African Sativa cause of their short flowering times. (Durban is a example and a damn good sativa)

these plants still show no sign of budding here. they have been growing in soil from a sprout until now (i checked, he said about 2 months now).
by sexual maturation i wasn't talking bout being male/female. i was talking about having the capability to be fertile ground for pollination. when i see these seedlings turn into tiny 0.1 gram nugs, i'll let ya'll know.

just that the proof is in the pudding; im currently looking at my friends 2 month old seedlings that have been on a window sill the whole time; they have not begun to flower yet.

I believe you're wrong.
A seed is already fertilized by the pollen therefore it's chromosomes have paired at meosis therefore a seed has it's identity/dna already set in "stone". Climate and temperature may play a very small roll but I'm not even sure if anything like those claims are scientific. I could ask my botany teacher this week.

chromosomes = genetic material
meiosis = process of pairing that genetic material basically making your biological self from your parents.
