Aeroponic or Rock Wool for clones
    #172298 - 12/29/08 01:47 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

They will be transplanted to an ebb and flow hydro system.

I'm leaning towards the areoponics. This is something I can build.Have found parts online but before I get started thought would get some opinions.

Thanks

do you mean rock wool?

aeroponic = no root support vs rockwool having root support

I like rockwool myself. I think Aeroponics root a few days faster and is fine if you're careful not to damage the roots transplanting.

Yes,I meant rock wool.:oldman2: Wonder what the differance between rock and steel wool is.

I will be using Hydroton in the ebb and flow. Never thought about hurting the roots while transplanting. Only if net pots were to be used and roots removed from there.

So rockwool is made from rocks and sand that have been heated and spun like cotton candy.

Rockwool is bad to breath. This must be when not wet.

Steel wool would rust very fast.

im not too careful with garden supplies. I don't drink my nutrient solution. If I open a bag of perlite and dust shoots up I won't walk in it. I havent had issues with rockwool yet.

Steel wool would be horrible I don't think metal holds water very well :P

steel wool is fun when used in tandem with a 9v battery.  warning: do not play inside.

I think if you are moving to an ebb and flow table, you should use the rock wool.  with aeroponics, the roots hang suspended into a mist without any real structure to support them.  it might be hard to transfer these bare root systems into hydroton without doing a lot of damage.  if the root structures were simply inside a rockwool cube, transferring the whole things into a basket of hydroton would be much easier and less damaging to the plants.

So rock wool it is. What size for clones. I will be using 6x6x6in deep pots and the clones will have to be there long enough for all the clones to be made ready.

You wanna go with aeroponics over rockwool. Much time saved. Better root systems.

As far as transplanting just pour the geolite or hydroton over the roots and go.

I have literally done this thousands of times both ways.
