Good point, except I can't grow enough food to feed my family in a 4x4 tent .

You dont have to grow everything you eat. Even growing a small amount helps. A small t5 set up on a kitchen counter can grow lettuce and herbs right there in the kitchen. You can use a little dwc or rockwooo cubes to not have soil pests.

Also you can use certain pieces of garlic/onion and regrow them at least once. And a garden is a perfectly acceptable use of a yard. In at least new york I know there are people that use the small grass (technically owned by the city) that homeowners are required to upkeep (there is some push back, but I know there is a guy specifically that goes around teaching people how.
Then again people give plants waaaay too much nutrients and then it just flushes into the water table/river channel/sewage system and fucks shit up.
Honestly the home-batteries tesla has been working on make solar power for homes that can store power for night time and makes living completely off the grid far more possible. I'm not 100% sure what materials they use though, or how sustainable they are.
Problem is electric companies don't like the idea of personal solar/wind generation (it kind of is the antithesis of their entire industry, so honestly I can hardly blame them). What they try to do or lobby for is underhanded though.

I grow my veggies with compost and no added nutrients and i got like 40 lbs of tomatos off one plant last season. I agree that most people grow with too many nutes but organics is really starting to become more popular.
I also do peppers, onions, herbs, fruit trees, all kinds of shit. I use them for cooking like making pizza herb pizza dough from scratch then making homemade pizza sauce. When i grew shrooms i did cubes but i also did a few gourmet edible ones like winecaps and of course portabellos.
Getting the munchies after smoking your homegrown bud is super badass when you have homegrown food to go with it.

Growing food is the same as growing weed.
Hydroponics can use up to 90% less water than soil so your argument is invalid. I have a waterfarm with a poblano pepper fed with fox farm nutes thats putting out soooo many peppers right now.
Its all about educating the public.

Here is a way to fix the problem. Get rid of citizens united and make it illegal for corporations to lobby congress. Place a cap on lobbying for campaign funds too. That way politicians aren't making careers as cronies in public office. Most laws written these days are in favor of corporations instead of citizens. Our system is completely fucked

1: you don't have to water all crops a ton. 2: capture rain water? 3: people are all ready doing it.
Ooooor be like me and live a 100 yard walk away from a river.
A lot of the methods to regrow a chunk of onion/garlic only requires air, water, and light.
These are just way individuals can curve the cost of living though, but more sustainable energy sources and curving what other costs are would be important too. Frankly I think a minimum wage should be 1 unit of a given currency, and all costs should be derived from that to make it livable.
But that would basically be socialism, and would also me a million times harder than it sounds (and then I realize I'm basically describing the storyline of "Walden Two")

Sucks being poor but complaining doesn't help either.
I don't understand why people complain about raising the minimum wage, it's a basic job you willingly took up. You're not doing anything anyone else can't do hence the minimum wage.

I mean, a huge amount of jobs that pay over the minimum wage aren't any jobs that anyone else can't do. Wages that can't support a living shouldn't be legal, because if people are just barely making ends meet they can't, without risking what little they have, better their lot in life.
The fact shit is just too expensive is even more obvious if you realize how much a basic education costs. It's all ridiculous.

I guess it depends where you live. Hawaii is pretty fucked economically. Of course all the corporations and super rich make the numbers here look good. We have some counties that are completely homeless tent communities now. Management positions start at about $12 an hour. For a 2 bedroom 800sq ft apartment in a shitty area, it costs me 1250 a month, and it only includes waste disposal. Electricity is .41 k/w, gas is 3.50 a gal(super cheap right now). The way people deal with it here is by living with their parents for most of their lives. Many people I know are raising several children and live with the husband/wife under the parent's roof. It's so sad to see homeless children. Unfortunately, this is life in the United states as long as the politicians are lining their wallets with corporate money.

I don't think it's non sequitor at all.
I do think humans aren't capable of following these kind of steps though. We tend to reject what would be best because the masses are looking at our problems from the wrong angle.

Dude, I would go homeless in Hawaii in a second if the locals weren't such racist assholes. You can swim and fish all day and eat bomb ass fruit and what not. What do you need money for when you're already in paradise?
