The problem is the cost of living, not the wages we earn (not that the two are not inherently linked, but the metric with which we should measure our costs should be the minimum wage).

^^what they said^^

I wouldn't categorize myself as 'older', but I make substantially more than minimum wage and have no formal schooling besides a high school diploma. I'd even venture to say that the %35 you mentioned, if that is an accurate estimate, gave up on themselves and settled. They deserve what they have, and shouldn't be complaining.

Or perhaps they ended up in situations where job stability was more valuable than trying to find a better one, or they like living in a town that they grew up in.

Nobody should make an unlivable wage, and that's why the cost of living is the problem. If someone can't support a family on an "average" wage there is an inherent problem in how we are managing our society.

Then again, perhaps our problem is capitalism. :awebig:

Minimum wage jobs can lead to higher wages if you apply yourself, and prove that you are a quality employee. Offering every person in McDonald's, for example, a $15 an hour wage isn't going to raise the quality of the product, just the cost.

Like I said, the problem is the cost of living. Raising the minimum wage just establishes a new cost of living. I mean hell. My dad has never made over $15/hr, and a raise to $15/hr at my job would double almost every single employee's wage (and increase the wages of all but the GM by 150%). Of course it's dumb. Like I couldn't meet labor goals if my life depended on it. And I mean people already get pissed enough paying almost $20 for 1 large pizza when they forget to use a coupon.

Controlling/Fixing the costs of housing/electric/water/gas/internet costs is the only way to fix this problem.

Frankly if people weren't so obsessed with using massive amount of water on their lawns it wouldn't be nearly as in demand as it is now.

Also you can use certain pieces of garlic/onion and regrow them at least once. And a garden is a perfectly acceptable use of a yard. In at least new york I know there are people that use the small grass (technically owned by the city) that homeowners are required to upkeep (there is some push back, but I know there is a guy specifically that goes around teaching people how.

Then again people give plants waaaay too much nutrients and then it just flushes into the water table/river channel/sewage system and fucks shit up.

Honestly the home-batteries tesla has been working on make solar power for homes that can store power for night time and makes living completely off the grid far more possible. I'm not 100% sure what materials they use though, or how sustainable they are.

Problem is electric companies don't like the idea of personal solar/wind generation (it kind of is the antithesis of their entire industry, so honestly I can hardly blame them). What they try to do or lobby for is underhanded though.

1: you don't have to water all crops a ton.
2: capture rain water?
3: people are all ready doing it.

Ooooor be like me and live a 100 yard walk away from a river.

A lot of the methods to regrow a chunk of onion/garlic only requires air, water, and light.

These are just way individuals can curve the cost of living though, but more sustainable energy sources and curving what other costs are would be important too. Frankly I think a minimum wage should be 1 unit of a given currency, and all costs should be derived from that to make it livable.

But that would basically be socialism, and would also me a million times harder than it sounds (and then I realize I'm basically describing the storyline of "Walden Two")

I mean, a huge amount of jobs that pay over the minimum wage aren't any jobs that anyone else can't do. Wages that can't support a living shouldn't be legal, because if people are just barely making ends meet they can't, without risking what little they have, better their lot in life.

The fact shit is just too expensive is even more obvious if you realize how much a basic education costs. It's all ridiculous.

I don't think it's non sequitor at all.

I do think humans aren't capable of following these kind of steps though. We tend to reject what would be best because the masses are looking at our problems from the wrong angle.
