Stored seeds opening prematurely.

A couple seeds in storage are partially open and cracked apart slightly. They aren't crushed or destroyed, just the 2 sides of the shell are coming apart very slightly on a few of them and they're still in an sealed bag.
Should open seeds be germinated soon or they will be lost? I get the impression that the stored humidity will escape and they will dry out. A few of them were squeezed closed, but not all will stay closed when squeezed shut.
Also wondering if there's up to date info on seed storage that might not have been covered in older posts. It seems storing them in air tight cool and dry place is best, optionally with rice or something else that absorbs moisture. Anyone know a much better long/short term storage technique? Appreciate any feedback.

I am pretty sure you need to either germ them or toss them as they have already started germinating.
Storing them with desiccant is your best bet imo as it removes all moisture.
Heres a good tut on making your own.

I've germed seeds that were slightly cracked, but not opened up the way you've described. The pic above gives you an idea of how deep a seed can crack or open up before it dies. It sounds like those seeds are toast though.

Put the seeds in a light proof container and then seal them in a mason jar. Store the seeds in the bottom shelf in your fridge tucked in the back. They'll be good years chillin in the back of your fridge if stored in an air tight container.

Thanks. That sucks. I wonder why the hell they opened like that. It doesn't seem like they are germinating necessarily, there's no plant matter visible, just a slight crack. They are open on 1 side only btw.
Shopping for seeds is a lot more fun than accumulating more than you could ever plant in 20+ years.

I also add white rice with the seeds to keep them dry.

Well 3 for 3 germination on the slightly cracked open seeds. So try anyway if you have this happen.
Too bad they were animal cookies from BCBD and died shortly after germination. The same thing happened a few months ago too so it's not because they were open. I strongly suggest avoiding Animal Cookies or even BCBD entirely, and not just because of my bad experience. I haven't found a single person who successfully completed a female animal cookies, and I've been looking.
edit: apparently bcbd will replace the seeds if this or something like this happens. So I've had a little bit of faith in bcbd restored.

As long as the root isn't dried out already, if its cracked open and put into rice its going to loose it capabilities. Though if you caught it open early you could save it.
