How do you tell if seeds are viable?

I have read that immature seeds float but have had quite a few germinate that floated, I have been told to apply pressure to the seed, but have cracked even a few breeder seeds (too much pressure perhaps) so how do you tell?

Edit: If you squeeze them between 2 fingers pretty firmly and they don't pop open also is a good indicator IMO.

How firmly? I have a feeling I'm squeezing too hard, but don't want to under-do it.

I squeeze pretty damn hard, I put it between the two padded parts of the tips of my fingers and squeeze almost as hard as I can, if I hear it crack or if its real soft(probably light colored as well) then I just throw it on the ground....Especially if you are picking from brick weed and have 100 seeds you might as well get the best of the best(at least in terms of viability), I have very very good rates doing this and I've grown a good bit of Mexican weed or bagseed weed anyway.

Sounds like what I'm doing, is it normal top not be able to feel you're fingertips after the first 5 seeds?

Yea you are doing it good...That's the exact feeling you should get. You can change hands/fingers just as long as you still are squeezing nice and hard.

Lol ya I got really baked one time before checking my seeds and destroyed like 20 because I was pressing them into a table with my finger way too hard, but if it's just in your fingers it's hard to crack the good ones
I think you can also warm up a pan, then throw the seed onto it for just a couple seconds to see if it pops like popcorn, but I've never tried this and probably won't because it seems like you could pretty easy fry the seed

I would say just throw all of them in a wet paper towel and see if they sprout - how hard is that? If they sprout, I would say they are viable
