90w led vs 400w HID

Ok, I recently set up my first grow room. It is 3x3x5 with a single DWC hydro system. It currently has one seedling under two 43w cfls that are lowered to about 5 inches abouve the plant. Im ready to invest in a light and Ive seen on ebay that I can get a 90w LED and a 400w ballast hood combo with MH and HPS bulbs for around the same price. What do you guys think? Should I use the cfls with the new light? Please let me know what you all think.

400 watt FTW. The 90 watt LED wont even come close to covering the square feet of your grow area.

I wanted to go the LED route, quickly realized that they've got a while before they catch up with the HIDs.

I'm DEFINITELY no expert on the subject, but as long as you can keep heat down, I'd think that you should use CFLs to light the lower portions of the plants. The more light, the better. Right?

Depends on what you buy... There are very expensive LED's that would exceed most HID

I just read that if you are going with a HPS you have to be extra careful about burning your plant.
If it's a 400w HPS then place it at least 15 inches above the plant. If it's 600w then 20 inches.
I also read that at beginning 15 - 24 inches is best and later on move it closer so it's 6 - 18 inches above.
I don't know if they meant the veg phase by "beginning" or if they mean beginning of flowering.. or when to move it closer "later on".

They meant when it's young. For the size of your construct, I wouldn't go above a 4. Remember the heat is quite a bit for HID. You need to have appropriate ventilation, reflectors, etc.

air-cooled "cool tube" w/600w HPS, i run it about 6-8 inches above plants. i would imagine with a larger air-cooled hood you could run em even closer than that.

I am looking at the black dog led and the diamond series by advanced led's I would bet from all the reading I have been doing that they will work better then any 400 or 600 wat hps system out there

It won't happen, man. Just because the MANUFACTURER says that it compares to a 400 or 600 watt HID, doesn't mean it's true. Ask Psychotron. He's all sorts of up on current LED tech...
