new to this and had some question
    #627388 - 06/13/12 10:50 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

hey all im in the process of getting my medical card to offer for medical usage and im starting to do my research. My big question is is the cost of lighting. to get the lights and to run them.  With my grow card i can have 12 budding plants and 12 non budding plants at one time...  I know there are a few differnt types of lights i can use but i wanted to go with the option that would burn as little energy as possible, I was reading about CFL.. now would that be a good option to use for growing?

i would just get a HPS. it's way better in the long run.

veg the plants with T5s and then flower with a HPS. especially if you're flowering 12 plants. you'll get WAY more out of HPS than CFL or anything else.

with HPS you get more lumens (light) per watt than CFLs or T5s. makes more sense.

but how do the two compare in power usage? i want to try to keep the power bill down as much as possible with the growing lights

well if you run 400 watts of T5 lighting, youll pay the same as running 400 watts of HPS lighting... im not sure how else to explain it.

with HPS you get more light per watt than anything other kind of light, per watt...

you can grow with CFLs but if you want good end product, get a good light.

Isnt that debateable? Since u have to keep it far and it creates uneven lighting unlike a bunch of cfls

Not debatable period.
It would take double the watt of cfls to compare to that of a HID system.
This is why HIDs are still the leader in plant lighting.

And CFL's actually produce more heat per watt than an HID light does. So you're also going to use more electricity to cool your space, too...

I have a friend who's dad grows with CFL's, and I constantly tell him he'd be better off with a could of 400's in there rather than 2 or 3 dozen 62 watt CFL's...

Hmm I see.  Thanks for clearing that up.

Any reason people get cfls instead of cheap security HPS's? Except misinformation lol. I seen a 70 watt one for 19$ at HD (ballast and bulb).

well i seen them as low high low 30ies wats... but but i was also was figuring that if i used a bunch of cfls.. i could spread them out more for more even light over all the planst instead of just having one big light that covers only a certin area...so would it be better in that manner  ...

also i seen 13 wat cfls on walmart tha put out 825 lums

oh also i got my hands on the growing elite marijuana book .. is that a good book to read?

HID will always out perform CFL's, not matter how many you have.  Better canopy penetration, more lumens per watt, better yield, better pot.  Now you do have to spend more money to vent and a decent sealed air cooled reflector and what not.  But that pays for itself in the long run.

A decent reflector helps with spreading the light around. And one can always use supplementary CFL lighting to boost lumens to growth lower on the plant.
