Depends on the strain. all in all it's about 3-4 months. Keep in mind there are a lot of variables.

Thanks. Im thinking of growing a couple plants for personal use. Are LED lights really viable? I know theyre cooler and use less power and space, which would be perfect.

If you are growing for a little bit of personal they will work ok.
I personally don't touch them yet. It's a new technology and is yet to be honed. A cheaper way to go for personal would be CFL or HO floro

i would go with T5s over LEDs for now. theyre cheaper and i would imagine more effective.
look for an indica or indica dominant hybrid if you want a short[er] flowering time.

It really depends on on how big you want it, and also what strain you're trying to grow. If you're doing small plants or (SoG), you can let them be seedlings for a week or possibly to, then you can flower for 8 weeks (strain dependent) and you're harvesting in 10 weeks.. Could be as much as 12 weeks though, even some 8 week varieties will want to bud for longer than 8 weeks. Its possible to do it in 10 though.

Holy crap seeds are expensive. Whats a good seed for a first timer? Also, how many seeds should be expected to survive?

Wow, man. Seed prices have gone way down in all honesty. And if you think about what you get from it, they're not expensive at all. 65.00 bucks for for 13 is a good deal man.
Maybe 1 in 13 wont germinate, and that's a fairly conservative estimate. You usually get a 100% germination rate.

Its good to know theyll all most likely sprout. I guess I had sticker shock. I remember when I was a kid throwing seeds away and trying to avoid seedy bags. From what I understand the smokes not what it used to be, more powerful. How much would you expect to harvest from a plant?

Way to many variables to tell you how much you will get. It depends on how much light, air exchange, nutes, experience, strain, etc.
But if you get at least a 400 watt HPS then you will at least get a few ounces at a minimum.
Personally I get 2 pounds per 1000 watt light.
