How to Make Dry Ice Extraction Hash Discussion. Help Needed!

Supposedly the fastest way to make hash. The best way? That depends on where your priorities are. Dry ice method definitely has some pro's and con's over other extraction methods so here's the breakdown.

Dry Ice is solidified CO2 (the gas we exhale and plants inhale.) It's a super cold substance that "evaporates" (technically sublimates) away into the air as it transforms from a solid to a gas. The fact that it's super cold and converts directly to gas are the clear advantages in the extraction process.

Start with an extraction bag. Most bags will work fine, however; some bags with a PVC coating will flake and chip after a few uses. In this photo we see our lovely assistant using a 5 gallon 200 micron bag.

Micron size can range anywhere from 70-240. In my experience it wasn't worth the time running it through anything below 120 microns. After several extractions we (my team of testers) found 160-220 to be ideal for making a good quantity of good quality hash.

Add your plant material (leafs-buds-stems) and a small amount of crushed up dry ice. Be careful when smashing up your dry ice and read all the safety warning on the dry ice bag before use. Most people add WAY too much dry ice their first time. A loose rule of thumb we found was about 1/2 lbs of dry ice for an OZ of material: More if wet bud - less if super dry leafs. Seal that bag shut to ensure no particles of dry ice or plant matter contaminate your hash.

As you can see in the video the technique is pretty simple. Shake the bag over a smooth surface for 30-90 seconds. The first shaking (which we will call "runs") will be the highest quality and will be sticky and golden. Gather this first golden stuff by scrapping it with a plastic card.

Repeat the process anywhere from 2-6 times. How many runs you can do depends on the material used and if it's wet or dry. The greener hash you get in the final runs are typically used for cooking. Decarbed a little before baking and mix right into any batter. Sugar cookies and brownies work well and should give you a nice buzz.
