i know everyone says fluorescent bulbs are the way to go with bonsai, but if you use a higher grade light will you get better product?
What goes into producing a bonsai pot plant?

Well a bonsai'd pot plant always stays in veg to be used as a mother. Yes you can eventually flower it.
Since you are taking clones from it the final product depends on a lot of factors, but will not be influenced by what type of light is being used on the mother.
Hmmm....I remember a really decent bonsai thread around somewhere let me see if I can track it down.

Yeah i was looking but not much that could help, plus i legally popped some xanax and percocet to come down off my roll yesterday.
So bonsai's are only useful for cloneing? I would have thought that the buds would be thicker than normal on a stubby little marijuana shrub lol.
well fauck then..... man i feel ignorant.

They'll have a lot of branches. But that's about it.

I use a bonsai training to increase canopy coverage, and to keep a level canopy as well. I've found this can increase yields of course. I'll try to get some pictures up tomorrow of an example.

Branches with stinky buds? I was under the impression if you trimmed all unnecessary fan leaves and kept the plant short and stubby, you would get a lot of branches but they would be loaded with buds...
I don't know though
don't quote me on that lol

The only reason I see for trimming fan leaves is to either increase light peneration or the leaves are dead. The leaves are the life source of the plant.
And yes I'm a shroomery member as well. I'll post that picture in a few more hours, just waiting for the lights to turn on.

Well yeah, every branch once put into flowering will be a bud. But you're talking about two different things now.
Trimming fan leaves, which I abhor, is as Stoney described. Fan leaves are the powerhouse of your plant. The majority of all the photosynthesis happening in your plant is going to be happening in them.
No fan leaves were trimmed from this grow. Every now and again I will remove one or tuck one down that is covering a bud site. But that is it. Of course this does not include the undergrowth which is no longer receiving light and the leaves die. This crop yielded 6 pounds. I see no reason to remove the fan leaves.
Now when most people are describing a bonsai technique in MJ growing, they are going to be referring to vegetative growth.
But there are other types of training that we use to increase branching and create bushy plants with more bud sites.
Topping is one of them. The other is Low Stress Training.
Topping is pretty self explanatory. You cut off the growing tips. This creates 2 more growing shoots from the one that you cut. Then you can repeat as desired. This is only done in vegetative state.
LST is tying down the main shoot to increase branching. And then repeating as desired as well.

Sorry I get litteral sometimes. But Bonsai is plant training, meaning both LST and HST would apply.
bonsai 1. The art of growing dwarfed, ornamentally shaped trees or shrubs in small shallow pots or trays. 2. A tree or shrub grown by this method.
But I know where you're coming from tho. It's often viewed as a different forum of training.

I was using it in relation as to how it was being referred to for our purposes of discussion. Yes any type of training is bonsai
True bonsai to me, is as you defined it above in the more traditional terms. And my mother is definitely a bonsai. Been around for 3 years, not nearly as old as the bonsai I've seen in China, but still pretty decent. I've also seen some people who have had mothers for 20 plus years.

I don't understand topping, do you cut the plant vertically horizontally? right above the first node? the whole stalk up until the first node?

for what my 2 cents is worth, I accidentally made a bonzai. once you know how topping works, you can top a small plant. after that I just kept cutting clones almost completely removing the growth and it would come back every week.
the plant didn't really do better than the clones I took from her. there were more branches but a smaller main cola. everything equalled up.
I saved the stem from her, ill post a picture later.
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

a pic would be nice.... are you saying it had low yield or weak potency?

He's saying it did the same as the other plants, no better no worse. Never really mentioned yield or potency.
Now let's all keep in mind that some plants respond better to LST and Topping better than others. Some strains will not reach their full potential unless you top them, while others can yield less. I've only heard of the latter, never seen that happen with any strain that I have grown.
I can attest to some strains not yielding they're full potential unless you top and train them though. Seen my yield double with some strains when I have done this.
