They sprout and then they stall. A day or two later they will become soft and droop or wilt over.
EDIT: Update- I moved them into a grow box with an intake and two exhaust fans. Hopefully the circulating air will help them breathe. Also switched from CFL's to a t5 light fixture.
Ok, you said that the soil had gaps in it so you pushed it down. I don't think the problem was pushing it down but the reason it had gaps in the first place. I've seen soil that has gaps in it when pored into a cup. You may say I have a little exp growing in cups and just about everything else from bathtubs to toilets. A good soil just pours from the baq like pouring oatmeal almost. Soils that leave gaps are generally soils that need to be busted up because they have to much clay in them. Very very very common in hardware store soils. Now I know getting Ocean Forest is a pain in the ass and it's not as good as it use to be either.
Next time your near a home depot give this a try
This stuff just cost me less then 5 bucks a bag.
I did a product test with this soil about a year ago and since I did the test I've been using it myself.
