Seedling won't stand up
    #444586 - 07/10/10 02:32 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So I germinated this sour diesel plant a little over a week ago and it's got its first serrated leafs out and working on teh second ones but the stem is so fucking weak it won't stand up, it is laying down sidewards with the leafs facing the light (up).

It could be that the plant isn't planted deep enough. Maybe I've been over watering it? I've watered it daily but only because the soil had dried out completely each time.

Can't take pics atm.
I don't want to give it support or fuck with it more - one time I lifted teh plant to make it upright but I'm pretty sure my fan forced it back down or it just went limp again.

ideas?

Get a straw and split it with a razor-blade. You should be able to peel it so its in a C shape, but when you let go, it should form back to its original O shape.

Anyway, pull it apart so its a C and put the stem in there. Let go, and it'll be an O. Stick the completed circle straw into the dirt, and it'll hold it up.

do u have a fan blowing on it for at least a half hour a day?
i see that as a common mistake in these cases..

EDIT: also do as mentioned above and get a fan!!

Got a fan blowing right on it, I'll try that out tomorrow.

Thanks Ras.

I'm only worried about the plant becoming reliant on that straw to stand up straight as opposed to holding itself up later.

use something else like a pencil to hold it up or take a metal coat hanger and make a U brace to help support it(letting it lay on it holding it up if that makes sense.. it may take a week but it will thicken up with a fan on it.. go for a hour on and like 2 off or vice versa.. even if u leave it on all the time it wont hirt it as long as its on low.. my first plant stretched bad and did the dame thing and it came back..

I came home yesterday to find one of my 3 seedlings fallen over, it wasn't broken but just had no strength to hold itself at the root joint. I just added a lil extra soil to hold the bottom a bit better and it's fine now.

It had also stretched a bit when it was first growing because I had it on a window sill without much light. Now it's got full all day light on the balcony and growing much better. At the same stage as yours. :ganja:

Daily seedling watering seems excessive to me. I water about once a week.

I've noticed a couple causes for seedlings to not stand straight.

Your dead on when you say it probably wasn't planted deep enough. That's the main cause I've noticed.

Top watering has caused my seedlings to fall over also.

I place all my seedling in a tray and water from the bottom up to prevent this. I start watering normal after the first transplant.

Anyways, I wouldn't do a thing. Just keep watering it when it needs to be. Transplant, and when the plant is 4 ft tall you wont even notice the plant was on its side at the beginning.

Nah man, the straw'll just help guide it. Once the stem thickens up, it'll be fine without it :]

you need more light.  The stems stretch out and become lanky becuase they are struggling to get closer to the light.  What i do is pretty simple in this case.  Get two tooth picks.  Stick them in hte dirt next to the plant that is laying horizontal.  Stick em in hte ground so that they cross each other at a high point, the top of them, then gently place the plant into the x made by the toothpicks.  Then move your light closer.  Adding a fan, as mentioned, will also help the seedlings strengthen its stalk.

Here's what i did for my last grow when that happened to one of mine.

Sounds like a bunch of issues. We don't really know how you started the seedling and what the growing conditions are. Seeds work well germinating in a bag with clean air and a moist paper towel. From their you either go straight to soil or a rockwool cube. Alternatively, you can just germinate in the rockwool cube.

Fluro's work excellent for seedlings. Clones like em too. With either T12's, T5's, CFL, remember the like the light close, as in 1 inch from them is just fine. You can use LED too, just don't use a HPS or MH super close, it will kill the plant at such a young age.
