Soil won't dry out
    #610867 - 02/28/12 12:46 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I haven't watered my soil since I planted my germinated seeds which was around four days ago. It is still damp and wet which is causing almost all my seedlings to stall and then rot. I have a good ratio of perlite already added to the mixture. I tried adding some more lights to the equation to try and help dry with the extra heat but I'm afraid this will also dry the babies out as well.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes sir, many drainage holes. I cut the 4 corners on the bottom off and even made holes in the middle of them.

OK just checking, so many make that mistake believe it or not.
Well seedlings don't need that much water, so you may only have to water once every week or two until the plants get some size to them.

What kind of soil are you using?

Believe it or not this is my first time ever having this problem and this is not my first grow. Unfortunately I am just using some Miracle Gro I bought at the local super-market. I live in the middle of nowhere and that's really my only choice. Also I don't have a credit card so ordering online isn't an option either. I've had many successful grows from start to finish using this mixture though. I went through a little rough patch in life and this is my first attempt being back. I'm thinking maybe since I'm a little shook it's transferring to my plantlings :um:

MG is some of the worst soil for weed on the market, so good luck.

Is there a Lowes or Home Depot in your area?

Yeah, I was about to say that the MG soil is explanation enough, and some MG soil varieties are designed to hold water.
You need an upgrade.

Not to sound like a broken record but I've never had these kind of problems with this soil before and in fact it came out of the same bag that I've flowered some very nice Sour D. and Cherry Kush with. Driving is a problem right now as I am immobile and the closest store like that is 45 minutes away. Would I be better off trying some soil from good ol' mother earth?

No, taking soil from the outside and bringing it inside will only invite problems.  Unless you pasteurize it.  There are pests and what not that are kept in check out doors, but once you get them indoors they can get out of hand.

What are your temps like in the room your growing in?

I would say room temperature. Mid to high 70's.

They sprout and then they stall. A day or two later they will become soft and droop or wilt over.

EDIT: Update- I moved them into a grow box with an intake and two exhaust fans.  Hopefully the circulating air will help them breathe. Also switched from CFL's to a t5 light fixture.

Id you pack the soil down real hard or anything??  I know you said you've used this soil before, but MG doesn't have good control standards.  Could be that this batch is WAY to hot or something.

Thank you for working with me hawk, I appreciate your patience.

Also that might be a very good thought. The cups I used were clear and I noticed there were some large gaps in between so I tried my best to push it as lightly as I could to make up as much space as I could. Of course I used electrical tape and covered it to make the container light proof.

What do you recommend my friend?

Squeeze the sides of the cup lightly, that should help break up the soil a bit.

If it's that the soil itself is just too hot then there's nothing you can do besides get different soil.

Ok, you said that the soil had gaps in it so you pushed it down. I don't think the problem was pushing it down but the reason it had gaps in the first place. I've seen soil that has gaps in it when pored into a cup. You may say I have a little exp growing in cups and just about everything else from bathtubs to toilets.
A good soil just pours from the baq like pouring oatmeal almost. Soils that leave gaps are generally soils that need to be busted up because they have to much clay in them. Very very very common in hardware store soils.
Now I know getting Ocean Forest is a pain in the ass and it's not as good as it use to be either.

Next time your near a home depot give this a try

This stuff just cost me less then 5 bucks a bag.

I did a product test with this soil about a year ago and since I did the test I've been using it myself.

"Magash!" is exactly what I said after seeing those party cups! I've tried myself before but it's always ended up  being lanky and large spacing between nodes after getting root bound.

Also a little update to my babes. I lost another one over night:frown: But the remaining two have really taken off and look extremely happy and healthy in their new homes! I think now that we have overcome the beginning struggle the roots will help the soil dry out much faster.

I have tried ordering Ocean Forest before and never got the packages!:mad2: But that Patio Plus looks almost identical to what O.F. has and sounds a lot cheaper! Thank you for opening my eyes to that nice little brand. It will sure blow what I'm using out of the water:crazy: I'm hoping that they will also carry it at Lowes. *crossing fingers*

Yup, saw it at Lowes today.

Yeah mine got rootbound also. I just treated em like they were hydro and just kept feeding the rootbound cups. They had to be watered 3 times a day.
