It boils down to, how tall you want the plants in question, and genetics. If I was going to grow a true sativa indoors, I'd most likely go 12/12 from seed to control over all height, and taking in consideration of their flowering time.
And say if I wanted a bunch of 10 to 12 inch indicas, then I'd start them from seed in 12/12.

Next time you find yourself in this spot, learn to tie them down. The more even you keep the canopy the better.
