Starting seedlings inside
    #542201 - 04/01/11 04:43 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I have a footlocker that I want to start my outdoor plants in. Its 2 feet high, 4 feet long, almost 2 feet wide. Will this be enough space to veg 10 white rhino seeds I just germinated til the first or second week of may? I plan on employing LST to better utilize my only 2 feet of space. I have about 150 watts of CFL bulbs. Inside of the box is spraypainted white. Ill place a small fan on a 10 minute per hour cycle, or something like that. Ill tinker with fan time, but should light be 24/0 or 18/6? If its 24/0 will my plants begin to flower after placing them outside?

Alternatively, Would a greenhouse keep plants alive through a frost if there was one around mid may?

yes a greenhouse will protect from frost ,and go with the 18\6 for the reason you mentioned that would be the safest

First off, I don't know the answer to this.

As to your first question,  I say yes.  However, I would use T5 Florescent strip lights. They sell them at Home Depot (at least in my area) in 3 foot lengths, in both single or double strips.  I would put 4 double bulb, 3 foot strips in there.  That's at least 224 watts.  The CFL's will work as well, but the strips will allow you the best use of space.  The are 2 inchs thick and sit flush with the wall.

Like this one but 3 ft long.

The LST training is the right idea and the white paint is good.

You will want constant air exchange.  I don't know if by fan you mean on the inside of the box or one bringing in air, but you will need a fan sucking air out all the time.  For air exchange and temp control.

24 hrs with the lights.  Otherwise your plants will stretch, and you don't have room for that.  I think mid May is to early for flowering, but don't hold be to that.  I've never grown outdoors.

Hope that helps.  GOOD LUCK.

Thanks, that does help. Id go with the lights you recommended, but I already have 6 CFLs rigged up. When I get more money, I might upgrade to a different light system for flowering if I can get a carbon filter to accompany it.

I have a 6 inch blade fan, Should I just cut a appropriate sized hole in the bottom corner and have it facing out? I dont have the means to do much else at the moment.

Intake hole at bottom, and fan and outtake hole at the top on the opposite side.

This is what I start my ladies in.  It's 2x2x2.  I do cheat a bit and raise the lid as they grow, but I don't train them much in here unless it's my mother.

I use solo cups to plant my seeds in, but you might consider trying to find some shorter and wider cups or pots.
