so i have decided to get a 600w led. i wanna give it a shot cuz of low heat long life and low energy usage. i figure if its bud production sucks i can always just use it to veg mothers
but what im wondering is this 7-band light spectrum realy beneficial or is it just marketing?
the price i can deal with but if the only lights i want out of it are reds and blues than its not such a good deal.here it is on e-bay

you could buy a nice hps for cheaper than that 600 watt led. i believe but not mistaken.

Hey sorry, I didn't see this thread earlier. Yes the different bands are important, you can do some research into which ones are the most important, or a little later when I have some time I'll check out the ones you posted and let you know if they're sufficient.
The most important thing is the penetrational power of the individual LED's. a 600W array with 600 individual 1W diodes won't be nearly as effective as a 600W array with 100 6W diodes, for example. Like, literally will be half the yield.

like a 300 watt with 50 diodes with a wattage of 6 watts per diode will equal the 600 watt some what. but with diffrences.

Id check out lumens too, that 600w led says its output is 9,400 lumen. A 600w hps output is 95,000 lumens. Maybe they had a typo on the LED. 9,400 lumens isnt a whole lot, you can get that from a couple 65w flouros.
Specs: •MegaPower XF600 LED Grow Light •7 Full Band Light Spectrum •600 Watts Full Power •288 Bridgelux USA LEDs •Red 660nm, Red 630nm, Blue 470nm, Blue 440nm, Orange 610nm, Violet 410nm, Infared 740nm •8 High Power Cooling Fans •White Powder Coated Steel Housing with Cooling Vents •6 Heavy Duty Brass Hanging Mounts •Includes Free Mounting Kit (Steel Cables & S-Hooks) •Output: 9,400 Lumens •Voltage: 120 Volts, 60hz

Deladude,
From what I've seen with LED's and what first hand knowledge I've had... is they're just a big marketing ploy. You're better off using a T5 8 bulb fixture than investing anything over $500 on an LED setup. They're just not practical for growing decent buds. If you really want to go something more "high tech" checkout Plasma Lighting. There's not much hype behind it because entrepreneurs are finding it hard to make any money off of em. They're expensive to produce, but last forever and use a minimal amount of energy compared to lumen output.
I may not be saying what you want to hear about LED's, but in actuality, every person that I know who's purchased an LED, put it aside and brought their HID out. If you're saying you're going to use them for veg, then why not just use cfls?

Lumens measures light output visible to the HUMAN eye, it has absolutely nothing to do with efficacy of absorption for plants.

Both .
Harry's statement about lumens is spot-on. Lumens relate to light seen/used by the human eye.
The 7 band information on the linked unit appears correct, but they do not say what LED manufacturer produced the chips. Quality varies in the LED market. Most LEDs are not made by the fixture manufacturers, Philips and CREE being obvious exceptions to that.
I would lump this into the list of things I would try if free, but wouldn't pay for.

I can say with (relative) confidence that I would expect a 600W LED fixture to outperform a 600W HPS, but it's hard to say by how much. If you're doing it to try and use less energy then I wouldn't go for it (ie, a 200W LED will not beat a 600W HPS no matter what they say), but if you intend to continue your power consumption at the same level, then LED replacements are likely a fantastic idea.

I wouldn't buy most if any of the leds that are too good to be true prices. I bought a smaller one looking for a refugium light for my aquarium. Within 3 days the face was corroding and the leds popped off in my hand cleaning it. Then shorted out ect. It was even advertised at safe around water for aquariums. Extremely cheap products. The different colors/bands can be important. Only if the plant can use that wave though. For aquarium use it was suggested that we should add a couple different colors of white to add more spectrum as "cool white" didnt cover all the bases. The led only emits the one color compared to HID lights that emit several or all of the colors in different intensities.
Mine was only a $70 mistake though.

Yeah, stick with brand names. I personally choose HPS for the price and the light intensity comes from 1 source, not 50 or 500 led diodes. However, I would like to try LED too, they look mad cool and more deceiving from the neighbor's window point of view. Something reflect light such as a sun in your house is more suspicious that neon red or blue light!
