Some Funny Growth at day 18
    #505086 - 12/12/10 08:36 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

With my first two grows, I never had any problems with such young plants.  These have been plagued with problems from the get go...  I blame it on the quality of the Nirvana seeds.  Three were small and white.  The rest had better color and were a good size, but they did not looked much better.

I transplanted the plants last night into 8 inch pots.  I used a fresh bag of FFOF and watered with 6.3 pH distilled water.  I used a 10th of a teaspoon of FF grow big to drop the pH of the water to an expectable range.

Question. Are they just reacting to the transplant, or is the soil running a bit hot, or something else?

Here are some of the things I see.
Photo 2.  The new growth has one extremely twisted leaf and a very white dry vein
Photo 3.  The new growth has one extremely dark green leaf and it to is dry.  Also has big chunks of the fan leaves missing because my cat is a monster.
Photo 4.  The new growth is deformed in spots and twisted
Photo 6.  The base of the leaves are curved and twisted (this is occurring on most of the plants.

It is over feeding I'm sure of it. FFOF is strong and I found this,  quoted from Ed Rosenthal's Handbook

"There are three common indications of over fertilization; wilting, a darker than normal shade of green in the leaves, and "crepeing," or thickening of the leaf tissue (like crepe paper). This does not necessarily harm the plant nor cause death. It is a yellow light of caution..."

I realize the 10th of a teaspoon of grow big did not help...
My next question is, what are some ways to bring down the strength of my soil?  More perlite and/or vermiculite?  Pre water it?

I'm not sure you can lower the strength without causing stress to your young plants, and a non nutrient substrate probally wouldn't help because if you use verm. or coir it will just absorb the high concentration, give it a good flush and hope for the best. Flushing it may take down the concentration check runoff I wouldn't recommend the grow big to ph adjust use correct buffer. Also the strain maybe strength sensitive and a hot dose at that age can be devastating, flush out as you would toward harvest and see what the plants look like in a week then since you flushed all the nutes' out you will have to start feeding them now start with a low dose of food or a seedling mix to get started again. This could casue problems down the road like getting males, poor growth, any stress at that age is not good. Since you are relatively in the beginning of your grow starting over may not be a bad idea, always do some homework on the strain your growing to see if it can handle a hot shot, if you don't know what you have start slow.

I decided to let them go and not flush.  I determined that they were in no danger.  Here are some updated pics.  these pics were taken yesterday.  They still show signs of hot soil, but they are looking much better.  Today even better than yesterday.  they will receive one more watering and depending on how they look, maybe a third before feeding them 1/2 strength grow big.
What I meant by my question, and my bad for not being more clear, was if and/how one might dilute the soil, prepotted.  I did not add any perlite or Vermiculite to the mix.  I just transplanted straight.  The Solo cups they started in were about 25 percent added perlite.  Yes, no more pH adjusting with Grow big.  pH down is just so damn sensitive to distilled water.  One drop and BAM!  Oh and thanks

flushing dilutes the nutreints and everythang out of the soil. just wait for the plant pot to be entirely dry then water it with twice as much water as the size of the pot.

however I'm not seeing any problems at all with that plant, just looks super indca. you're gonna have a lot of fun trimming

Northern Lights.  Going to read up tonight on it.  I should have done that already.  NEWB!  Yeah, I watered them last with a mini flush and will give them a reg. in 2 days or so.

I'm calm.  At the time I was worried.  It's hard to just let them be.  It will get easier.

I've had the same problem with FF/OF.
Started using other soil for starting.

Light Warrior is also good.

that's correct light warr. is seed starter mix and ff\of is potting soil FF|OF is a much hotter dose because of it. Always read the bag to see what's inside!

They are all slowly starting to pull out of it except one.  It just keeps looking more and more like a plastic plant.

I flushed it today.  I will see how it reacts.

So I've watered 3 times since the transplant, one being right after transplant, and every time I water most of them seem to revert back to the "over feed state'.  All I can think is that the soil or water is more acidic than I think.  It sucks because it makes me not trust my Digital pH tester that I just bought.

http://www.texashydroponics.com/shop/product.php?productid=3160&cat=385&page=1

I always try and pH my distilled water at 6.3 - 6.9  lately closer to 6.9.  Should it be Higher/Lower?

Question...
How long should one wait to test the water after adding pH up or down?
I put a drop in and shake well and test a few mins later.  Is this wrong?  Should I wait longer?

Have I missed diagnosed?  Are they not overfeed, but simply just in too low of a pH soil?  If my tester is working correctly, then they are fine.  I water with 6.6 and the Run off is 6.3
This should not be this complicated.
Ahhhhhhhhhh... I hate to control my plants have over me!  :boo:

you could be making it more complicated than it is.. Some soil out the bag and your medium should be fine for least a month into growing, adding nutes then *flushing* over watering is the problem with recovery.

When plant burns/ back off with nutes and water for a min/ then add little neutral water/ dont need to drown them. Then let them dry up/ Cannabis likes to dry out not have wet feet all the time/ careful not to overdry....

also wide fat leaf strains tend to curl when producing, straightening out later ..

you cant watch grass grow to closely, or it will drive you crazy. Looking good otherwise. dont panic.

Amen

I have not even used nutes yet, and I let them get super dry.  The dryer they are, the better they look.
We will see how the next watering goes, but for sure NO nutes until they look better after a simple watering.

I usually just add some shake it up good for about a minute or two and then test right away. Hasn't seemed to bother my plants
