KaptKid's Refrigerator/Cooler Experiment
    #497771 - 11/13/10 03:46 PM (14 years, 19 days ago)

If this works I'll turn this into a tek.
The idea is to be able to run through freezer when needed or just through refeg only. I live in the sub tropics so I'll have to change as needed.

The refeg was given to me with inside door damage. Shown, free is good.

So off with the interior door.

Used a carpenter's saw to trim off excess foam.

The door seal.

The black strip is the magnet that holds the door closed.

Used a 1/8 piece of paneling painted with Kills Premium, 2 coats, installed in seal were plastic door was.

Ready to be put on door.

Get the heavy duty

Put it

All over door

Install seal

Clamp into place. Let dry for 30 min's

This will be on going. Back when I'm back... Any thoughts or suggestions or welcomed.

The 5 gal bucket for the freezer.

Has over 40 ft of 5/8 garden hose in there.

Had to drill a hole in bucket and seal with silicon.

Drilled holes inside of freezer. One for return water to enter and one for water to return to 45 gal can.

Also drilled holes in refeg. One for return water and one to pump water into the system.

The pump,adjustable 300 to 500 gph

The can with pump in place.

Everything installed on the inside.

Water Control: So water can go through the ice bucket or straight into refeg.

This has the refrigerator/cooler box completed.

Next, the radiator, this will set inside the reservoir and radiate cold. I hope.

This has been made for a 7 1/2 gal reservoir.
Using 1/2 inch cpvc. There is 26 ft of pipe in that pic.

It will look like this in the reservoir. Less the 1/2 pint jars(temporary incubator);)

The radiator for EZ Coner. About 48 ft of tubing. Cost-$45

The Game Plan

Got an EZ Cloner and a Megagarden with 432 watts of T5HO
Wonder if I can run both at the same time?
Will build a radiator for EZ cloner later. Will post it in this thread.
Some where down the road want to chill a 70 gal reservoir with this. Baby steps 1st. Will add pic's for that, when I get to that part.

The growing part(you know with plants) will be in Grow Journals.

From Here I'll keep data on temp's. The Journey Continues.

This is going to be cooling a reservoir.

If this works I'll make containers that use all the room in there.

I'd try to bury some metal plumbing a few feet into the ground and have a pump from my reservoir pump the nutrient solution through the plumbing cooling my reservoir for the cost of running the pump. That is assuming I had a reservoir to cool.

I've looked into this. Needs to be 15 to 20 ft deep and about 300 ft of metal tubing.

Can't do that in this location.

I didn't read that you lived in the Subtropics, my bad. I live up North so I wouldn't even need to bury the plumbing 2/3 of the year.

Are you sure it would need to be that deep? I've been to beaches in the tropics and was always surprised how cool the sand got when I dug my feet into it. I also helped dig a 5 foot deep hole(not by hand) in Texas when it was 100F or something stupid out and when I jumped into the hole the soil(mostly clay) was fairly cold.

Glad you guy's are along for the ride.

People on other sites have talked about this but that was all, talk.
All the DIY teks were for a/c's as cooler's. Thats alot elect.
I belive this will run about $15 a month.

So for I spent:
trash can $15
pump $50
everything else I had or found. The refeg was given to me.

Still need to add two values to the outside for water control.
Need about $2 more in parts. Its Sunday or I would of gotten the parts.

Ok, back in the day I use to be a HVAC tec. In this old folks home I was working at they had this old cooling system so I'm gonna borrow a idea from it for you. Now this thing use to have huge blocks of ice (bigger then a bus) and coils use to run threw them carrying water in them then the water was pumped to other parts the building to do the cooling and then back to the ice then back out again.

Here is what I'm thinking. The bucket with the hose. Now if you can fill that bucket up with water and freeze it with the hose in it still in it (the hose will have to be empty or the water in it will freeze). Once the water in the bucket is frozen the water going threw the hose will be moving so it won't freeze.

With the solution going threw a solid block of ice you may not need the bottom half of the fridge.
